The Effects of Human Overpopulation

The effects of human overpopulation are multiple and ominous. As birth rates climb, natural resources get used up faster than they can be replaced, creating enormous economic pressures at home while the standard of living plummets throughout the rest of the world. As the result of having so many people who do not understand our reality and its behavioral demands, we have created an interrelated web of global environmental problems. We are depleting our natural resources: our forests, fisheries, range lands, croplands, and plant and animal species. We are destroying the biological diversity on which evolution thrives (this is being called the sixth great wave of extinction in the history of life on earth, different from the others in that it is caused not by external events, but by us).

With powerful new electrical and diesel pumping techniques, we are draining our aquifers and lowering our water tables. We are systemically polluting our air, water, and soil, and consequently our food chain. We are depleting the stratospheric ozone that shields us from harmful ultraviolet radiation. And, we are experiencing symptoms of global warming: heat waves, devastating droughts, dying forests, accelerated species extinction, dying coral reefs, melting glaciers, rising sea levels, more frequent and intense storms, and a more rapid spread of diseases.

U YE HTUT PRESS RELEASE : REGARDING ATTACKS ON MYANMAR CITIZEN IN MALAYSIA

The government of Myanmar has issued an Aide Memoire to the Malaysian Ambassador on Tuesday urging them to investigate recent attacks made on Myanmar citizens according to local media.

Three Myanmar nationals were killed in Selayang District, Malaysia on the 30th and 31st of May and on the 3rd of June in separate incidents and five more were hospitalized. Many more living in this District no longer go to work as they fear for their lives and are now taking shelter in the Kapong monastery.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Zin Yaw met Malaysian Ambassador to Myanmar, Dr.Ahmad Faisal Bin Muhamad to discuss the attacks made on Myanmar citizens working and residing in Malaysia, according to state-owned Myanmar Radio and Television.

The Aide Memoire urged the immediate investigation of attacks made to Myanmar citizens and requested immediate legal action to be taken on those found responsible.

Moreover, it also calls upon the Malaysian authorities to give adequate protection for the safety of Myanmar citizens and to ensure that attacks resulting in physical injuries, loss of life and property do not occur in the future.

Myrauk-U locals object to MSF clinics for Bengali patients

Residents of Myrauk-U Township in Rakhine State have objected  to plans by the Holland-based Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) to open clinics for Bengali patients.

MSF Director Richard Kinder held a meeting with township administrator Ye Win, officials of other governmental departments, town elders and members of social organisations at Myrauk-U General Administration Office on the 29th of May.

During the meeting, Mr. Kinder sought approval from local authorities to open clinics in Myrauk-U town and Shantaung village and the use of jetty to transfer the Bengali patients from the villages to Myrauk-U town.

The local people refused the request of the MSF Director and objected to the move, according to Aung Soe Myint who attended the meeting.

The MSF coordinator demanded that the jetty was needed to carry patients according to work procedures. But the local people objected to this due to fears that the Bengalis would go in and out the town wards. MSF started running clinics in the town five months ago, said Aung Soe Myint.

Despite objections to MSF’s running of clinics, the MSF is currently the only organisation providing medical aid to Bengali patients in the area.

 

Rakhine NLD members show their support for the two-child policy

The NLD offices from 8 townships in Sittwe District released a statement on May 31 saying they support the policy, which is aimed at reducing the number of birth rate of the Bengali communities in the townships.

The NLD offices in the district showed their support for the policy on that day even though NLD chairperson Aung San Suu Kyi slammed the policy as an unlawful discrimination on May 27.

The statement says the population growth of the Bengali communities in the whole of Rakhine State is extremely high, and they supported the policy as it is required for the state’s geographical location and national security.

“The state government’s policy is right as there are too many Bengalis in Maungdaw and Butheetaung [compared with that of other national ethnics]. The government only issued the policy as it’s required indeed. [We] support it. The population growth [of the Bengalis] is terribly high,” said Kyaw Aye, the chairman for NLD (Ponenakyun Township).

San Shwe Kyaw, the secretary for NLD (Sittwe Township) also said, “This kind of scheme is the one which appears only this time. There were also other schemes like that before. We do not see anything to object to it,”

When Eleven Media contacted Nyi Pu, a central committee member of NLD and the chairman for Rakhine State NLD about the statement, he replied that he didn’t know anything about it and it’s still not the whole state’s idea.

Dr. Aye Maung, the chairman for Rakhine Nationalities Development Party also gave his view on the policy.

“We accept the policy. Only if [you] live in our state, you will know it’s necessary. If you live in Yangon and Shan State, you may not understand it. Compare the today’s population with that at the time of our country’s independence. You can understand it. How do we control it, if not by the child-limit policy? If we can’t control it, there may come out regional conflicts. We accept it for the sake of the sovereignty of our state,”

THAILAND: No country will accept Rohingya.

Thailand said Tuesday that it was unable to find any other country willing to accept about 2,000 Rohingya refugees from neighbouring Myanmar who have been detained for several months.

“There is no third country ready to take them,” foreign ministry spokesman Manasvi Srisodapol told AFP. “They are worried that if they receive one group, tens or hundreds of thousands of others will follow.”

Many of the asylum-seekers have been locked up in crowded detention centres in Thailand for several months, prompting rights groups to call for their release.

Manasvi said the government was aware of the crowded conditions in the centres.

“Thai government agencies are currently discussing ways and solutions to improve their conditions,” he added.

Since Buddhist-Muslim tensions exploded a year ago in the state of Rakhine in western Myanmar, thousands of Muslim Rohingya boat people—including women and children—have joined an exodus from the former junta-ruled country.

Those who arrived in neighbouring Thailand have been “helped on” by the Thai navy towards Malaysia—their destination of choice—or detained as illegal immigrants.

Thailand initially said the asylum-seekers would be allowed to stay for six months while the government worked with the UN refugee agency UNHCR to try to find other countries willing to accept them.

Manasvi suggested they might stay longer, describing the timeframe as “hypothetical”.

UNHCR spokeswoman Vivian Tan said the ideal situation would be for peace to return to Rakhine so that the refugees could return home, but admitted that was unlikely to happen soon.

She said the crowded conditions at the Thai detention centres were not ideal but authorities were “trying their best to cope with this influx of people”.

Rights groups have voiced concern that the Rohingya men have been separated from their wives and children—who are held in separate community shelters—and are not allowed to go outside unless they require hospital treatment.

Myanmar’s Two Child Policy and the Human Rights Paradoxes

The local authorities in Rakhine State reaffirmed a 2005 regulation
imposing a two child policy for Bengali Muslims in Buthidaung and
Maungdaw townships. This policy evoked thunderous howls of protest from
human rights organizations as well as the international media that
slammed it as a violation of human rights

Several countries in Asia have child restriction policies. Such 
policies are either already in place, in planning stage or contemplated 
as population growth poses a challenge to the general welfare of their 
citizens. China’s one-child policy is a well known example. Vietnam has 
had a two-child policy since 1960, which is now relaxed; India has a 
two-child policy for a specific defined group; and the Phillipines is 
giving serious thought to child restriction policies.
