Latest reports from family members of other activists detained with Hla Myo Naung indicate that he is at serious risk of going blind due to lack of treatment in detention for his eye condition. “Ko Hla Myo Naung is going to completely lose his vision. After 13 years Min Ko Naing received in person Homo Homini Award

Prague, October 4, 2013 – Min Ko Naing, the leading Burmese democracy activist from the 88 Generation Student Group, ex-post recieved the Homo Homini Award in Prague.

For his outstanding courage and effort he demonstrated during his political activism and struggle for democracy in Burma, Min Ko Naing was originally awarded in 2000, but due to his long term imprisonment he never had the opportunity to personally receive the award.

„When I received the Award in 2000 it was my eleventh year in the jail and I felt like to be forgotten. Homo Homini was light that showed me it was not true,“ said Min Ko Naing during the Homo Homini ceremony the 3rd October 2013 in Prague.

“It was Václav Havel who proved that the true love to humanity cannot be limited by nationalism, religion or discrimination. Me and Václav Havel, we were not close friends, we lived ten thousands kilometers far from each other. But under the roof of freedom, peace and human rights we were like family,” said Min Ko Naing.

The Award Ceremony included film screening ‘Burmese prisoners’, recitation of the Czech translation of Min Ko Naing’s poem and discussion with public about social and political developments in Burma.

President Thein Sein receives ’88’ student leaders in his farm house

Myanmar’s President Thein Sein met 88 Generation Peace and Open Society Group on Saturday in his farm house in Nay Pyi Taw.

One member of the 88 Group, formed with former student leaders of the 1988 Pro-democracy Movement, said the meeting focused on the ongoing issues in Myanmar.

“The president and his ministers explained the ongoing issues related to workers, farmers and religious and racial affairs. Our side discussed what we had known about those issues. We also discussed the facts we had known about the country’s peace process,” said Min Zeya from the group, who attended the meeting.

“The president said he would direct the government and regional authorities to have more contacts and cooperation with the 88 Group in its activities,” he added.

The meeting that lasted from 10a.m to 1p.m was reportedly arranged by the Myanmar Peace Center (MPC).

During the meeting, the president was accompanied by Presidential Office ministers, the immigration and population minister and the livestock, fishery and rural development minister.

The 88 Group comprised 10 representatives, including Min Ko Naing and Ko Ko Gyi.

The president’s farm house, the venue of the meeting, became more famous after a meeting between Thein Sein and members of the interim Press Council earlier this month. The president donated 50 million kyats (about US$50000) to the council, attracting public criticism against the acceptance of the donation.

The 8888 Silver Jubilee Convening Committee would like to inform the people from democratic forces, living in various foreign countries and wishing to attend the 8888 Uprising Silver Jubilee, that the Committee will give as much assistance as possible to anyone who possesses a passport or other travelling document; but encountered difficulties to get a visa to attend the 8888 event. In such cases, the Committee asks those concerned to send their personal data to the committee in order to get assistance.
Note: If any American citizen is interested, he or she does not need to apply for a visa as an arrival visa can be given once in the country. However, you have to inform the Committee that you will attend the 8888 Uprising Silver Jubilee. You are also supposed to send us the copy of your passport’s first page. We would thus be able to get involved and solve any problem if facing obstacles at the airport.

Any Burmese citizen, living in another foreign country and wishing to apply for a visa, needs:

1. Brief bio of the applicant
2. Copy of the passport’s first page (the passport has to be issued more than 6 months ago)
3. Phone number and email address of the Burmese Embassy from the country of residence
4. The stay length in Burma
5. 2 passport size photos

Note: The Committee can just give assistance for your visa application process to be easier; however, all charges involved to get the visa will be at your expense.

KIA participate in political meeting between government ,UNFC and leader of the 88 Generation Students Group-video

 

Kachin Independence Army (KIA) will participate in a political meeting scheduled for this year between the government and United Nationalities Federal Council (UNFC), a leader of the 88 Generation Students Group said.  

Mya Aye, one of the leaders of the pro-democracy student group, disclosed the information at a press briefing held in Yangon on January 10, after his group’s study tour of northern Kachin State from January 3 to 5.

KIA said it would take part in talks during the meeting between KIA Major General Gwan Maw and the 88 Generation Group last week, according to Mya Aye.

“KIA clearly stated that it would attend the meeting between the Myanmar government and UNFC even if a political dialogue is not possible now as the war escalates,” Mya Aye said.

KIA still sticks to the policy of political dialogue and is willing to hold talks only if the government reduces its offensive and guarantees political engagement, he added.

The government has offered to hold preliminary talks beginning in mid-January as part of the peace-making efforts together with UNFC, said Min Zaw Oo, director of Myanmar Peace Centre in Yangon, on January 6.

Armed clashes between the Myanmar army and KIA resumed in June 2011, ending a 17-year ceasefire agreement between two sides. About 2,400 small and large skirmishes had occurred up to December.
