Facebook and Microsoft executives to visit Myanmar

Executives from Facebook and Microsoft will visit Myanmar, according to the Myanmar Information and Communication Technology Development Corporation (MICTDC).

“It’s certain that they will come in July if they don’t come this month.  Their visits will be beneficial for Myanmar,” said MICTDC Chairman, Khun Oo.

During the opening ceremony of the Internet Freedom Forum held in Yangon on Saturday, Deputy Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Thaung Tin said he had met with representatives from Microsoft and discussed about lowering the prices of their products.

Perils facing Myanmar migrant workers in Malaysia

Because of the poor conditions in Myanmar, many citizens have gone abroad in search of proper jobs. In this case, some have gone to developed western countries while others have had to make do working in regional countries such as Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore. Among those countries, Malaysia is chosen as an ideal place for many Myanmar migrant workers.

For many working abroad, segregation and bullying are some of the difficulties of their daily lives. After the sectarian riots occurred in Myanmar, nationals working in Islamic countries have suddenly become victims of violence and hatred. A few months later eight Myanmar nationals were killed in Indonesia, and in late May four Myanmar migrant workers were murdered in Malaysia. As a result, Myanmar’s foreign ministry made a diplomatic request asking the Malaysia government to protect Myanmar nationals in the country. However, we are hearing reports that the Malaysia government is arresting Myanmar nationals instead of investigating their murderers. 
These kinds of actions can ruin the relations between of the two ASEAN countries. Therefore, Myanmar government should resist requesting the Malaysia government to protect Myanmar citizens. The Daily Eleven encourages the government to allow the return of Myanmar migrant workers whose visas have been cancelled due to taxation or other problems and for businesses to open cheap airlines so that the workers can return home.

Burma Army officer attacked three villagers without reason on June 5.

Captain Gyi No, a Karen National Union (KNU) leader from the Tenasserim Division in southern Burma confirmed with Karen News that a Burma Army officer attacked three villagers without reason on June 5.

Eyewitnesses said that the three villagers were so badly beaten that they needed hospital treatment. The KNU’s Captain Gyi No claimed the attacked was unprovoked.

“The Battalion Commander, Lt.Col Aung Win Htun, from the Light Infantry Battalion 588 used a bamboo pole to beat up the three Karen villagers in Wa Daw village. The three villagers were seriously injured in the attack and had to be sent to Myitta village hospital for treatment.”

Captain Gyi No explained that the Wa Daw villagers were cutting wood with a chainsaw for a village building.

“The commander heard the sound and came out to the villagers and beat them up. Other villagers tried to protect the three men who were being beaten. The Commander pulled his gun and threatened to shoot the
villagers.”

The Burma Army Battalion 558 is under the control of the number 2 Tactical Command of the 19 Operation Command headquarters based in Htee Hta village.

The KNU’s Captain Gyi No pointed out that the Burma Army, despite the ceasefire agreement between the KNU and the government, still abuses local people. Captain Gyi No said the Burma Army’s presence in the region is the problem as the Army are setting-up camps in close proximity to communities.

Captain Gyi No said the Burma Army is also restricting villagers right to travel or to query developments in the area.

“Since Lt.Col Aung Win Htun arrived in Wa Daw village he has restricted all the villagers from hunting for wild chickens and other small animals. He has threatened villagers who have asked for compensation from the Italian-Thai Development Company from their land and properties that have been destroy by the construction of
Dawei-Kanchanaburi Highway.”

Wa Daw village is located on the Dawei-Kanchanaburi highway that is being constructed by the Italian-Thai Development Company.

Captain Gyi No said it is frustrating to have a ceasefire agreement in place while witnessing the Burma Army threaten and abuse Karen civilians with impunity.

“It is frustrating that the Burma Army continue to use their power to abuse villagers. All we can do is investigate the case and report it to the KNU Mergui-Tavoy District leaders.”

ခ်ျပၿပီးမွ ဆက္လက္ လုပ္ေဆာင္ သြားမည္ျဖစ္ေၾကာင္း မယ္လစခန္း ဥကၠဌ ေစာေအာနက္က ယခုလို ေျပာသည္။

ထို႔အျပင္ မယ္လဒုကၡသည္ (၃၆၄၄)ဦးတို႔က MFLF ၏ ျမန္မာႏိုင္ငံသို႔
အဓမၼ ပို႔ေဆာင္မည္ကို လက္မခံေၾကာင္း လက္မွတ္ေရး ထိုးကာ စစ္တမ္းေမးခြန္းမ်ား ျပင္ဆင္ေပးရန္ ေတာင္းဆိုသည့္စာကို ကုလသမဂၢ ဒုကၡသည္မ်ားဆိုင္ရာ မဟာမင္းႀကီး႐ံုး(UNHCR)သို႔ လိပ္မူကာ ေမလ ၂၇ ရက္ေန႔က ေပးပို႔ခဲ့သည္။

ဆက္လက္၍ ထိုင္း-ျမန္မာနယ္စပ္တစ္ေလွ်ာက္ရွိ ဒုကၡသည္စခန္း ၉ခုစလံုးတြင္လည္း ဒုကၡသည္မ်ား၏ သေဘာထားစစ္တမ္း ေကာက္

5 suspects who have been accused of killing a nephew of Shan MP escaped with weapons

It is reported that 5 suspects who have been accused of killing a nephew of Shan MP managed to escape from the Muse district justice court, a town on Sino-Burma border.

“The incident took place at 4.30 pm local time, when the 5 suspects were transported to the district court from the prison. Escaping by snatching the rifles from the police escorts and shooting at them. One of the policemen on duty fired back, but missed the suspects and directly hit one of the policemen, who was standing guard, he died on the spot while 2 other sustained injuries. Three of the suspects managed to escape with 2 weapons,” said a person who is familiar with the local police.

 

The 5 suspects aree (Liphan), Ai Sam, Ar Jee, and 2 Chinese Muslim (Panhsay), the drug dealers, who have been accused for killing the nephew of a Shan MP from Shan Nationalities for Democratic Party (SNLD). Now 2 of them have been re-arrested but it is not yet known who they are.

In response to the escaped suspects: “It is very dangerous for our children that the suspects are on the run with weapons. Sai Ai Ling, my son was with his friend who died in the incident. What we can do if the gangs (the suspects on the run) come to kill my son,” worried a mother of a plaintiff from Namkham.

The young men who w ere involved in the incident that killed their friend should have been provided with security by the authorities, one of the parents told SHAN.

“How could the suspects act against the police with their hands locked up with handcuffs. I cannot understand how they could escape. Why were the parents of the plaintiffs not informed when the judge ordered the suspects to appear in court,” complained the accuser’s parents.

“The court previously wanted the case to be transferred to Lashio due to security concerns in Muse. But, we have appealed for the court not to transfer the case because we cannot afford it.” On 29 May, the appeal was considered, the courts final decision being that the case will be handled by the Muse district court. There has been 4 trials so far at the Muse district court. It poses the question as to why the court has not settled the case, although all the witnesses have been produced,” said a relative of Sai Ai Ling who was killed.

It has also been reported that people from Muse and Namkham, the 2 towns on Sino-Chinese border, are fearful that 3 of the suspects are still running loose with weapons.
