Following its officially registration with the Federal Electoral Commission, the Karen National Party (KNP) established an executive committee on 15th November 2014.

The KNP’s, newly elected secretary, Mahn Kyaw Nyein, told Karen News that the executive committee will work towards getting officers in charge of respective portfolios in place as soon as possible.

“The Executive Committee will act until a new committee is formed following a future party conference. We plan to recruit up to 1,000 members and set up a main party office.”

The Karen National Party said they had established an executive committee that will now appoint members for each designated section, and those positions would include both men and women of all ages and would be recruited from different regions.

Naw Sussana Hla Hla Soe, the director of the Karen Women’s Empowerment Group (KWEG) said that introducing and initiating a committee for the new Karen Party if it is working in the interest of the people was welcomed.

“It is not good to create more Karen parties but their goals and objectives seem principled. If their purpose is to represent people and work with other Karen groups then we should welcome them.”

The registration of the KNP means that there are five legal Karen political parties in Burma, these include – Phalon-Sawow Democratic Party (PSDP), Karen Democratic Party (KDP), Karen State Democracy and Development Party (KSDDP) and Karen People’s Party (KPP) – the only party set outside of Karen State, in Yangon.

The Karen Nation Party (KNP) is the fifth legal Karen political party registered with the Federal Electoral Commission of Burma.

PSDP is a member of the Nationalities Brotherhood Federation (NBF). KPP and KDP are members of the Federal Democratic Alliance (FDA) and KNP has recently joined UNA.

The KNP’s elected 13 committee members are: Mahn Thein Shwe as president; Mahn Htain Win Sein, Mahn Ohn Maung, Saw Lun Tin and Mahn Tin Shwe as vice presidents; Mahn Kyaw Nyein as secretary; Mahn Min Ye Htwe, Saw Hsar Ta Paw, Saw Kapaw Moo and Mhan Kyaw Aye as assistant secretaries; Mahn Aung Myaing as treasurer (1) and Ghar Than Aye as treasurer (2) respectively.

As many as 60 delegates from the Yangon Division, Bago Division and Irrawaddy Division attended the meeting hosted by the Karen National Party. During the meeting, they agreed to join the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) and appointed Mhan Htain Win Sein, Mhan Kyaw Nyein and Mhan Min Ye Htwe as spokespeople for the party. CR. KIC

31/10/2014 The Kawthoolei Armed Forces (KAF) the proposed united Karen armed force, held its inaugural conference to establish the group’s formation at at Klo Htoo Baw Headquarters in Sonesee Myaing Village, Myawaddy Township, Karen State from 29th to 30th October.

Major Tun Tun, the Democratic Karen Benevolent Army (DKBA) 2nd General Staff at Klo Htoo Baw Headquarters said: “We have founded the Kawthoolei Armed Forces, but some organizations are not yet ready. Originally this meeting was going to be held over three days, but we will be able to complete everything in two days.”

He explained that the core objective behind founding the KAF was to unify all Karens under one banner. Previously various Karen groups have tried, but not succeeded, to unify the Karen into one group.

The conference opened on 29th October with an introduction section in the morning followed by an afternoon discussion on establishing the KAF.

The meeting was attended by about 250 representatives from various groups including: the DKBA; the KNU and Karen National Liberation Army/Karen National Union – Peace Council (KNLA/KNU-PC); the Karen National Defense Organization (KNDO); the All Burma Students Democratic Front (ABSDF); various Karen Women’s groups; Karen youth networks and township representatives.

Major Tun Tun said the KAF “will begin to form with the groups we already have [that are willing to join the KAF]. The Karen National Union (KNU) according to its policy approves of the formation of the KAF but is not yet ready to join.”

After discussing the formation of the KAF at their 13th October Central Permanent Emergency Meeting the KNU announced that they approved of the idea of forming the KAF because it had previously existed, but they would only take the decision on whether to join at their upcoming congress meeting.

According to a KAF press release on 29th October the objective of the KAF is to represent all the Karen people in their struggle for autonomy whilst standing for equality and justice.

The KAF also pledges to preserve and safeguard its motherland and national culture, to resist those who damage the peace, to cooperate with other ethnic armed groups, to support peace, to stand on the side of justice, and to join hand-in-hand with other democratic forces to achieve a true democratic federal union.
