กองทัพไทย ยัน ฝึกคอบร้าโกลด์ 2015 ร่วมสหรัฐฯ ตามปกติ เผย เน้นฝึกช่วยเหลือด้านภัยพิบัติ

วันที่ 29 ม.ค. พล.ท.บัณฑิตย์ บุณยะปาน เจ้ากรมกิจการพลเรือนทหาร กองบัญชาการกองทัพไทย กล่าวถึงกรณีที่ นางเจน ซากี โฆษกกระทรวงการต่างประเทศ สหรัฐอเมริกา ระบุว่า สหรัฐฯ ลดระดับการฝึกร่วมผสมไทยและสหรัฐฯ ภายใต้รหัส “คอบร้าโกลด์ 2015 ว่า การฝึกยังมีตามปกติ ซึ่งที่ผ่านมา ทั้งไทยและสหรัฐฯ ได้ประชุมเตรียมสถานที่ และเน้นฝึกในพื้นที่ภาคกลาง เป็นการช่วยเหลือภัยพิบัติ โดยเป็นการฝึกในรูปแบบไลท์เยียร์ ที่เน้นเรื่องการบรรเทาภัยพิบัติและการวางแผนไม่ใช่การเน้นฝึกด้านอาวุธ ซึ่งในแต่ละปีจะหมุนเวียนการฝึกแบบไลท์เยียร์ และเฮฟวี่เยียร์

ทั้งนี้ พล.ท.วัลลภ รักเสนาะ เจ้ากรมยุทธการทหาร และ นายแพทริค เมอร์ฟีย์ อุปทูตสหรัฐอเมริกา จะร่วมแถลงข่าวการฝึกคอบร้าโกลด์ 2015 ในวันที่ 2 ก.พ. ที่กองบัญชาการกองทัพไทย และจะเปิดการฝึกที่โรงเรียนเตรียมทหาร จ.นครนายก วันที่ 9 ก.พ. และปิดการฝึกในวันที่ 20 ก.พ. ที่ศูนย์ฝึกทางยุทธวิธีกองทัพบก อ.ม่วงค่อม จ.ลพบุรี ซึ่งประเทศที่จะเข้าร่วมการฝึก อาทิ ไทย สหรัฐฯ สิงคโปร์ ญี่ปุ่น อินโดนีเซีย สาธารณรัฐเกาหลี และสำหรับประเทศที่เข้าร่วมสังเกตการณ์การฝึก (Combined Observer Liaison Team : COLT ) ได้แก่ เมียนมาร์ กัมพูชา ลาว เวียดนาม เยอรมนี เนเธอร์แลนด์ บรูไน และปากีสถาน

THAILAND: Foreign Ministry denies hiring US lobbying firm

The Foreign Ministry and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Suprapong Tovichakchaikul had never hired Davenport McKesson Corporation to provide lobbying services in the US, said the ministry, adding that none of them have any connections with the firm.

The Foreign Ministry further said that a check of the background of the American company by the Thai embassy in Washington DC in coordination with some US agencies showed that all the US agencies claimed to be the firm’s clients had denied they had anything to do with the firm.

Earlier, former Democrat MP Kobsak Sabhavasu posted a message on his Facebook Page accusing the government of entering into a secret deal with the US government to allow the US to build a naval base in Thailand.  He also accused the government of hiring the lobbyist firm to provide lobbying services for the government in the US.

Mr Wisarn was at the Phang Nga Immigration center yesterday to inspect the facility, following a Rohingya riot there earlier this month.
“The media often knows that the Rohingya are arriving even before the police do,” he said.
“And when the media are present, the Rohingya cry and put on a performance designed to get sympathy. When the media are not present, they act normally, and even seem to enjoy their interaction with the officers,” he said.
The “feigned pitifulness” of the Rohingya reported by the press is giving Thailand a bad name,” Mr Wisarn said.

American Murdered in Krabi: Son Knifed in Long Horn Saloon Tragedy

PHUKET: An American was stabbed to death early today in a bar in the Thai holiday province of Krabi because he refused to stopped singing, police said.The man’s son, who was also singing with his father, was seriously wounded in the attack at the Long Horn Saloon in Ao Nang, a coastal resort town. The killing took place when three local men objected to the Carters hogging singing time at the saloon about 1am today, officers said. The dead man and his son were taken to Krabi Hospital and the son was transferred to Bangkok Phuket Hospital in Phuket, a neighboring province also noted for tourism, early today. Three men have been arrested for stabbing the two American with sharpened steel rods, a preferred local weapon. The three men are Ratikorn Ramin, 27, Sathit Somsa, 40, and Noppanan Yoddecha, 26. They are being held in Krabi. Adam Carter declined a request for an interview today. He appeared to be in reasonable condition and able to talk when reporters called at his room. It’s believed the stabbing took place out the front of the saloon. The killing is bound to reignite the issue of tourist safety in Thailand. Police are using more security cameras on Phuket and have introduced ”Safety Zones” in key tourist areas, including the nightlife hub of Patong, on the west coast.

US green light for Myanmar aid work

The United States has eased financial sanctions against Myanmar to enable US-based non-government organisations to  to operate in the country in recognition of recent political reforms in the Southeast Asian nation.

The announcement by the treasury department on Tuesday allows transactions in support of aid groups and charities working in areas such as democracy-building, health and education, sports and religious activities.

It follows recent by-elections in which opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi was elected to parliament, the release of hundreds of political prisoners, and a raft of reforms implemented by a military-backed civilian government since Myanmar’s generals ended decades of direct rule in 2010.

Myanmar has been isolated for decades by sanctions imposed over human rights concerns and the country is one of the poorest in Southeast Asia.

But the US government has said it will  “meet action with action,” gradually easing sanctions to reciprocate the government’s democratic changes. The European Union and Australia have also made moves towards easing sanctions.

U.S., British diplomats observe Karenni, gov’t peace talks

Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – Three foreign diplomats attended the peace talks between the Karenni National Progressive Party [KNPP] and the Burmese government delegation on Wednesday. The two sides agreed to a cease-fire during state-level negotiations.

A peace mediator, Hla Maung Shwe, told Mizzima that U.S. attaché Andrew Webster; second secretary of the British Embassy Joe Fisher; and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees representative Hans ten Feld observed the talks held at the Karenni State guesthouse in Loikaw.

“The advantage of their presence is that they are like witnesses. That means the meetings have transparency. They could listen to the whole discussion. The government wanted to show nothing was secret,” said Hla Maung Shwe, who also attended the meeting.
