Hundreds of undocumented Myanmar migrant workers in nine townships of Tak province and Mae Sot are fleeing to Myawaddy of Myanmar after the Thai police launched a crackdown early this month. “Many workers are being arrested by the Thai police. I fled from the factory to Myawaddy when the police raided other factories. Our factory owner helped as flee,” said a worker. “The crackdown on Myanmar workers started on 1 Feb. So far, the Thai police have detained about 600 Myanmar migrant workers,” said Moe Gyo, general-secretary of Myanmar Migrant Worker Rights Network and chair of the Joint Action Committee for Burmese Affairs. Over 100 undocumented Myanmar migrant workers and three factory owners from Mae Sot were arrested. The police also arrested over 600 migrant workers and 15 factory owners on the first week of February, he added.ELEVEN MEDIA

Maesot-based freelance reporter Ko Par Gyi was arrested by Burmese army at the end of September in Kyaikmaraw Township while covering the news of fighting between DKBA and government troops. Par Gyi was a former aide of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi in 1988-1989 and his wife was also a former political prisoner. His whereabouts as well as his fate is still unknown.

His wife Than Dar said local authorities, police and soldiers of Light Infantry Battalion 208, based in Kyaikmayaw, had apprehended the journalist in the town in late September or early October, and he had not been heard of since.

“I am very worried about whether my husband is still alive or not,” she said during a press conference held in Rangoon on Tuesday afternoon, where she was being supported by human rights activists. “They [the army] should show him in public.”

Mon State Border Affairs Minister Htay Myint Aung told The Irrawaddy that the police had apprehended Aung Kyaw Naing and then handed him over to local army commanders. “That’s all I know about that story, he is being detained at the base of battalion 208,” he said.

Than Dar said a police corporal at Kyaikmayaw Police Station had told her privately that he had seen Aung Kyaw Naing in custody of the army, and that he appeared to have been beaten.

She said she visited the battalion 208 base with the help of the Mon National Party, where an army captain claimed his men had detained the journalist and then handed him over to the Border Affairs Ministry. A recent visit to the military’s Southeastern Command in Moulmein had neither helped to clarify the situation.

A heavy weapon blast hit near a restaurant on the road passing through the Dawna Range between Myawady and Kawkareik yesterday, killing four people and injuring ten people, according to reports.
Vendors and passengers were killed and injured after the blast took place at around 10:30 am while a line of vehicles carrying passengers waited in line due to a road block caused by a truck, according to Alebotal Sayadaw Sandimar.
“I went outside the monastery to tell the kids from the donation pavilion not to get too close near the vehicles as they were coming fast and the kids could be in danger. The weapon fell between the donation pavilion, the restaurant, and the passenger vehicles. At first, I didn’t know I was hurt. I only knew that I have been injured after I ran back inside the monastery. The rest of the patients have been sent to Kawkareik Hospital,” said the monk.
The monk has been receiving medical treatment for his leg injury at the Myawady Hospital after he arrived with a motorcycle. Myint Thein, age 40, one of the injured people, died on the way to Kawkareik Hospital. The rest of the injured people consist of three adults, three teenagers, and three children. The names of the dead people have not been revealed yet, according to a Kawkareik resident.”It’s bad that this took place on the Dawna Range. This may harm the livelihoods of the people and the trade. The economy of Myawady is border trade. This incident could lessen trade and largely affect the tourism industry,” said a business owner from Myawady.
Heavy fighting broke out for half an hour between Light Infantry Regiment 230 and the Democratic Karen Benevolent Army (DKBA) on Friday near the entrance of Katankuukawnwet village at the east of Kawkareik. Over 200 local residents fled to Thai-side after heavy weapons were fired near the military security camp at Warpoe Hills. The Thai army and officials have been providing aids to the refugees at Maethawaw monastery in Thailand.
