1) Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) fought against Burma Army for two days while TNLA was on an opium-eradication mission on the border between Mogoke and Mongmit townships on Feb 2 and Feb 3, 2015.Because of the clash 2 students and 3 villagers were seriously wounded, and more than 2000 from five Ta’ang villages, and other Lishaw and Chinese villages fled to the mountainous areas near the towns.
2) Because of that fighting, some ethnic villages near the battle have been totally abandoned and the schools in them are now closed. So the government must try to ensure that these schools are reopened because just a few days are left for students to study and sit the final exam and the ongoing fighting will be threatening their education. Given that, the government must stop the offensive targeting civilians and take responsibility for the 2 wounded students.
3) More than 1000 government soldiers from bases in Mogoke and Mongmit and Mandalay Hill, as well as 2 gunships and 1 fighter jets are now used in the offensive and there have been heavy causalities on both sides.
4) We denounce the brutal and indiscriminate use of force by Burma Army because it violates the Geneva Conventions that prohibit against utilizing armed helicopters, heavy weapons such as artillery, and excessive manpower and firepower.
5) Such kind of using excessive force is all the more inappropriate in the current situation , when President Thein Sein has publicly shown willingness to sign the nationwide ceasefire agreement on Feb 12 , 2015. So we, Ta’ang Women Organization and Ta’and Student and Youth Union, condemn the use of heavy military power such as armed helicopters during large-scale offensives that prevent the signing of ceasefire agreement and peace process.
6) So we demand the following
• The government stop immediately and absolutely the full-scale offensive
• The government stops immediately and absolutely the use of fighter jets, gunships, and rockets during civil war with ethnic groups.
• The government cooperates with the public in eradication of opium and other narcotics
as a national priority
• The government take responsibility of the welfare, education and resettlement of the war refugees

WAR: Burmese army lauches major offensives against KIA as government offers a nationwide peace accord

KNL

Battles spread across Kachin and northern Shan State as the technical advisory teams from KIO and Burmese government prepare for a meeting next week in Myitkyina. A series of intense battles raging across Kachin region between Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and Burmese Army in areas under KIA’s 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Brigades, except in KIA’s 5th Brigade area around KIO administrative capital Laiza.

A battle took place between KIA’s 12th Battalion troops and Burmese army’s 323rd Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) troops at Nam Hpang Hka Hku near Kawng Ja village in Mansi Township on Sept 11 at 6 am. The two sides encountered again at around 9 am at Lung Bra near Nam Hpang Hka Hku.

On the same day, KIA’s 12th Battalion troops launched a counter-attack on Burmese army positions at Kawng Ja, Bum Sen and Lung Bra at around 1 pm as Burmese army troops prepared for another offensive operation on KIA’s 12th Battalion positions. Another group of KIA troops under 12thBattalion encountered a combined force of Burmese army’s 323rd LIB and 522nd LIR under Military Operation Command (MOC) -16 near Mung Ding Pa village in southern Kachin State.

In the same area on Sept 11, Kachin people militia’s (MHH) 27th Battalion troops fought against Burmese army’s 522nd LIB troops at 8:05 am. During the battle, Kai Hteik-based Burmese army’s 68th LIR troops assisted 522nd LIB troops by firing 81 mm mortar shells on MHH’s 27thBattalion positions for at least three times.

Similar battle took place between Magyeng and Kawng Ja as another Burmese army battalion, 507th LIB, approached KIA’s 12th Battalion territory from Maji Kung Kaji passing through Je Hka on Sept 10 at 11:30.

Local sources say more reinforcements came as Burmese army troops continued their offensive operations against KIA’s 12th Battalion. On Sept 11 alone, four military trucks carrying Burmese army soldiers and artillery ammunition headed to Kawng Ja in KIA’s 12th Battalion territory from Bhamo.

As battles intensify in Kachin and northern Shan State, both sides prepare for another round of talks in Kachin State capital. Burmese army used to launch major military operations against KIA whenever the two sides scheduled to meet for talks. Kachin local observers who get tired of seeing the same pattern of military offensives just before talks question Burmese government’s commitment to peace process and national reconciliation.

Burmese Army planted Landmines on Border-Areas

CREDIT NARINJARA 12.JUNE 2013

( Dhaka, 12 June 2013): Serious allegations have been raised against the Burmese Army as the planter of landmines along Burma-Bangladesh border ignoring the international norms. The Bangladesh authority, while raising the allegation, said that Burmese armed forces have planted landmines along the border pillars no 37, 38, 39 and 40 with variation of distances from 70 yards to 100 yards.

The international border areas between Burma and Bangladesh comprise hills covered with thick forests at several places and there is no fencing in many locations.

“The area is located in the northern parts of Maungdaw township of Burma, which is adjacent to Taungbro area of Bangladesh,” revealed a border expert while speaking to Narinjara.

A local media report quoting the Bangladesh home ministry said that Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) had already notified its counterpart in Burma about the violation but it is yet to get any reply from the concerned Burmese authority.

BGB director general Maj-Gen Aziz Ahmed told the media recently that the Burmese authority, as per the international rules, has no right to plant land mines within 150 yards from the international zero line along the border with Bangladesh.

He accused that the Burmese government, while violating the border agreement by planting land mines, also continues ignoring the concerns expressed by the Bangladesh counterpart.

Now the BGB has reported to the Bangladesh government about the violation and urged the government in Dhaka to resolve the issue with diplomatic efforts.

It is understood that the issue will be raised by the Bangladesh delegates during the foreign secretary level meeting between the two neighboring countries in Naypyidaw on June 14 next.
