Singapore and Malaysia have long-standing restrictions on interfaith marriage between Muslims and people from other religions

About 200 senior Buddhist monks convening in Rangoon on Thursday have begun drafting a religious law that would put restrictions on marriages Buddhist women and Muslim men.

Ahead of the two-day conference, the monks — who are highly revered in Burma — had said that they would meet to discuss how to resolve ongoing tensions between Buddhists and the country’s Muslim minority.

On Thursday, the monks announced that preventing interfaith marriage would help improve inter-communal relations in Burma, and much of their time was spent discussing a 15-page draft law that would introduce the restriction.

“We hold this meeting with the intention of protecting our Buddhist race and our religion, and also to have peace and harmony in our community,” said U Dhammapiya, a senior monk and a spokesman for the convention.

U Wirathu, a well-known nationalist monk, said he was delighted with the plans to try to stop any Buddhist woman from marrying a Muslim man. “I have dreamed of this law for a long time. It is important to have this law to protect our Buddhist women’s freedom,” he said during a press conference.

U Wirathu leads the controversial 969 campaign that is being implemented all over Burma. It encourages Buddhists not to do business with Muslims and only support fellow Buddhists’ shops.

The event is being organized under the auspices of the Sangha Maha Nayaka, Burma’s supreme monastic council, a body that is considered to be under state control. Its participants came from townships across Burma to convene at a monastery in Rangoon’s Hmawbi Township.

The monks said they would collect signatures to pressure Burma’s Parliament to adopt the law, adding that they would send letters to President Thein Sein, opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi and all other lawmakers.

They said the law would follow other examples of restrictions on interfaith marriage, such as those that are in place in Singapore and in Muslim-majority Malaysia.

“We found that there was peace and harmony in Singapore after they ratify this law in their country. This is why we should not have a problem [passing a similar law] in our country,” U Dhammapiya told reporters.

Singapore and Malaysia both have long-standing restrictions on interfaith marriage between Muslims and people from other religions. The rules require that non-Muslims convert to Islam in order to register their marriage.

A copy of the law proposed by the monks would require any Buddhist woman seeking to marry a Muslim man to first gain permission from her parents and local government officials. It also requires any Muslim man who marries a Buddhist woman to convert to Buddhism.

Those who do not follow these rules could face up to 10 years in prison and have their property confiscated, according to the draft law.

Myanmar Reject the Comment of UK Foreign Affairs Minister Baroness Warsi-“changing immigration law”

If so, we would like to ask United Kingdom to recognise all the Myanmar Nationals as one of the british ethnicity. Please kindly change your immigration law to accept as one of your indigenous ethnic. May be (Burglish) 🙂

The Myanmar Reject the Comment of UK Foreign Affairs Minister Baroness Warsi

United Kingdom’s Foreign Affairs Minister Baroness Warsi has reportedly said, in the House of Lords, an independent investigation commission with regard to illegal migrant Bengalis in Myanmar should be formed referring to the term Bengali as Rohingya.

He said so during the debate of Burma Campaign UK and him at the Lords in England on 5 June.

Burma Campaign UK has been known as an NGO to persuade the international community into adopting Bengalis in Myanmar as Rohingya.

U Zaw Aye Maung, Minister for Rakhine National Affairs of Yangon Region, said in his response that he had not accepted UK Foreign Affairs Minister’s comment at all.

“There are such loud shouts all over the world. They do their business and our government will do they should. We don’t need to care,” he said.

U Khin Yi, Minister for Ministry of Immigration & Population, says in a press conference on the conflicts that had broken out in Rakhine State that the name of Rohingya does not include in the list of recognized nationalities of Myanmar while there are only illegal migrant Bengalis from Bangladesh to Myanmar.

Ministry of Information’s Vice Minister U Ye Htut says that he rejects the term “Rohingya” used by UK Foreign Affairs Minister since there is no Rohingya nationality in Myanmar.

Myanmar nationalities refuse to accept UK Foreign Affairs Minister’s comment because they have already known some Muslims in Rakhine State as Bengalis.

“Our government has already rejected the report of Human Rights Watch. There seems to be a plot behind the scenes. Don’t worry about that and the government knows what they should do,” said U Myo Thant of Kamaryut Township.

We do believe that people around the world, have very different lives and ways of living. They follow the rules of their countries main religion, culture or its political system. There are countries that have very strict ways of living. For example, in Saudi Arabia, alcohol is banned and the consumption of alcohol is not permitted. There are countries where it is looked upon as wrong and even a crime, for a man and a woman to hold hands in public. In (UK) and in most Western countries, alcohol is legal and we have a lot of freedom to express ourselves in public, within the limits of the Law. Usually countries decide what is acceptable behaviour, through their religions or political beliefs. We should never pass judgement on the way other people live their lives. We should respect other cultures and belief systems. Above all, I am just curious that is it possible for an NGO like Burma Campaign UK to put pressure to change the other countries sovereignty rights. If so, Why don’t we start from the countries which are always violating the Universal declaration of Human rights rather than always pointing finger to Burma. I do believe that, this is not the time to do this instead of helping us moving forward to actually benefitting for the people Burma. We always pay our heartful thanks to the British government for helping us long. But, in this case, Burma Campaign UK is not reflecting the overall Burmese and British government need to find the truth from all the people in Burma. Not only a bunch of political parties, but also overall Burmese. We would still like to believe that British government is actually working and helping us like before rather than pushing something which can flame the fire for conflicts in Burma. Thank you very much.

Shame on Human Rights Watch – Who finance you?

249042_359879087468423_510362462_n

A delegation from Human Rights Watch was recently in Saudi Arabia. To investigate the mistreatment of women under Saudi Law? To campaign for the rights of homosexuals, subject to the death penalty in Saudi Arabia? To protest the lack of religious freedom in the Saudi Kingdom? To issue a report on Saudi political prisoners?

No, no, no, and no. The delegation arrived to raise money from wealthy Saudis by highlighting HRW’s demonization of Israel. An HRW spokesperson, Sarah Leah Whitson, highlighted HRW’s battles with “pro-Israel pressure groups in the US, the European Union and the United Nations.” (Was Ms. Whitson required to wear a burkha, or are exceptions made for visiting anti-Israel “human rights” activists”? Driving a car, no doubt, was out of the question.)

Apparently, Ms. Whitson found no time to criticize Saudi Arabia’s abysmal human rights record. But never fear, HRW “recently called on the Kingdom to do more to protect the human rights of domestic workers.

There is nothing wrong with a human rights organization worrying about maltreatment of domestic workers. But there is something wrong when a human rights organization goes to one of the worst countries in the world for human rights to raise money to wage lawfare against Israel, and says not a word during the trip about the status of human rights in that country. In fact, it’s a virtual certainty that everyone in Whitson’s audience employs domestic servants, giving her a perfect, untaken opportunity to boast about HRW’s work in improving the servants’ status. But Whitson wasn’t raising money for human rights, she was raising money for HRW’s propaganda campaign against Israel.

HUMAN RIGHTS WATCH GOES TO SAUDI ARABIA FOR BEGGING MONEY ?

[The EU’s “Generalised Scheme of Preferences” (GSP) allows developing country exporters to pay lower duties on their exports to the EU. This gives them vital access to EU markets and contributes to their economic growth. The reformed GSP, which will apply as from 2014, will further focus support on countries most in need. ]

Myanmar readmitted to EU trade scheme
12 June 2013, 22:05 CET

(BRUSSELS) – The European Union on Wednesday readmitted Myanmar to its trade preference scheme, saying it wanted to support reform in the once pariah state through economic development.

Myanmar’s membership of the scheme was withdrawn in 1997 due to concerns over the use of forced labour under the then-military junta.

But the EU said the International Labour Organisation had last year reported “necessary improvements” to labour practices in Myanmar, which was formerly known as Burma.

The Irish presidency of the EU and the president of the European parliament signed legislation on Wednesday confirming Myanmar’s readmission.

“Given the positive developments in Myanmar/Burma in the recent past, it is important that the EU supports this by facilitating economic growth and development opportunities,” said Irish jobs and enterprise minister Richard Bruton.

The EU scheme grants developing nations preferential access to the 27-nation bloc for several products in the form of lower tariffs.

In London, Justine Greening, the International Development Secretary, welcomed the news.

“We have been calling for the EU to recognise that Burma’s standards are improving and this is great news,” she said.

“Boosting trade and exports is vital if Burma is to develop its economy and escape years of poverty.”

The EU in April agreed to lift the last of the bloc’s trade, economic and individual sanctions against Myanmar in response to the military’s progressive ceding of power to civilians.
