Taungup residents arrested in Muslim murder case

NARINJARA NEWS

( Taungup, 18 July 2013): The Arakan police have arrested six residents of Taungup, a town located at southern part of Arakan with the suspicion of killing ten Muslim pilgrims last year in the town. The news of the arrest of six persons was confirmed by U Tin Thein Aung, a Taungup based politician.

“I come to know about the arrest of 6 persons on Thursday morning. But they were actually arrested by the midnight of Wednesday. I got the information as the arrested persons were brought to Thandwe prison in the morning,” said U Tin Thein Aung.

The arrested persons have been identified as U Thein Maung (alias Tun Naing), Ko Wing (alias Maung Pu), Pauk Sin (alias  Tun Myint), Ko Thein Shwe Maung, U Tun Kyaw and U Tun Win.

The Taungup based politician did not cite any concrete reason for the arrest but he assumed that they have been arrested by the authority for their suspected roles in sensational murdering of ten Muslims on 2 June 2012.

The incident of killing ten Muslim pilgrims in Taungup after they were dragged out from a bus by a furious  mob was an immediate after affect of the rape & murder episode of an Arakanese young woman by three Muslim goons that took place Rambre township of Taungup locality. The bus was on the way to mainland Burma from Thandwe and it happened while the bus was crossing the town.

Following the arrest of six residents, the security has been tightened in Taungup. Additional security forces have been deployed by the authority in many key places of the locality and the situation remains peaceful.

Six government workers have been fired from their jobs in western Burma following their refusals to join duties in rural worksite for the security reason.

The dismissed employees were working in the Agriculture Mechanization Department under Arakan Agriculture & Irrigation Ministry, said one of the drive-out workers.

U Aung Tun Thein, who was a senior tractor driver in the department with 28 years long service record informed that they were fired from their jobs on 23 June by an order of U Bo Bo Aung, director of Agriculture Mechanization Department based in the Arakan capital city Sittwe.

Besides U Aung Tun Thein, the other five dismissed tractor drivers are U Tun Win, U Tin U Latt, U Kyaw Myo Win, U Myo Min Tun and U Tun Aye Kyaw.

According to a source closed to the workers, all the six tractor drivers of the agricultural department were asked to harrow an area of 300 acres by their tractors in Pauktaw township. But the drivers refused to obey the order citing the reason that the plot was nearer to a Muslim refugee camp in Kyini Byint.

But initially the drivers went to the locality for ploughing the land and worked for one day. However they were later escorted by three soldiers apprehending unpleasant incidents there. Thus their mission in the first week of June came to an end because of the security reason. Continue reading “Sense of insecurity prevails in western Burma, Six government workers face dismiss”

Security officials: Still no information on North Korean hostages

PANGLONG NEWS 17.JULY 2013

Burmese officials on the hunt for North Korean hostages in Tachilek, opposite Thailand’s Chiang Mai, say they still have no news on their presence in Burmese soil.

“The last we heard of North Koreans on their way to Thailand was 4 years earlier,” a security officer who asked not to be named told SHAN. “They had mistaken the Burmese shore north of Tachilek for Thai territory and had embarked there. We told them to return to where they came from.”

The Mekong, beginning from China and flowing past Burma and Thailand in the West and Laos and Cambodia in the West to Vietnam into the Pacific, has long been a means of travel and transportation for people in the region especially after its rapids were demolished by the Chinese a decade earlier.

Apart from the Burma Army, there are Burma Army-run People’s Militia Forces (PMFs) and Border Guard Force (BGF) 1008 and elements of the United Wa State Army (UWSA) active in the area.

Burmese officials interviewed by SHAN also maintained that there are no poppy fields in areas northeast of Tachilek. SHAN’s Shan Drug Watch researchers have reported existence of poppy fields northwest of Tachilek. “It’s been a few years since we have received any reports of poppy fields in the northeast,” said a researcher.

The Burmese officer interviewed by SHAN wondered whether the 64 North Koreans as reported by AFP on 13 July were actually in the neighboring territory, meaning Laos.

Burma, Laos and Thailand meet at what is now known as the Golden Triangle.

Myanmar’s Lower House speaker said a national race protection law would be considered only if the issue was raised by members of Parliament and union level organizations.
Speaker Thura Shwe Mann was replying to the question of a reporter during a meeting with members of Myanmar Journalists Network in Parliament Building in Nay Pyi Taw on Thursday. Also together with Shwe Mann at the meeting were MP’s Aung San Suu Kyi and Thein Swe.  “Parliament is responsible for legislative affairs. To make a law, the union government has to draft a bill first. Likewise, MP’s can submit a bill. Then, MP’s also have to discuss that bill. This is why we will consider (any proposed law) according to the parliamentary procedures if it is submitted by those concerned,” said Speaker Shwe Mann.
