Naypyidaw: The Election Commission has summoned two major political parties in Arakan State, the Rakhine Nationalities Development Party and the Arakan League for Democracy, to a meeting over the recent renewed violence in the region, said the leaders of the parties.

U Phe Than, a lawmaker of people’s parliament of the RNDP from Mraybon Township, told Narinjara that a statement from the presidential office was read out and their parties were told to cooperate with the government in order to restore peace and order in Arakan State in the meeting.

“ Commission member U Myint Hlaing along with four other members read a statement issued by the Presidential office to us. They told us not to get involves in the current conflicts and to cooperate with the government in lessening the problems, suggesting that we, the political parties, as well as the commission itself have responsibilities to do so”, said U Phe Than.

U Myo Kyaw, the secretary of the ALD, said the election commission also warned in the meeting that any party or individual involved in renewed communal violence would have action taken against them.

“We, the ALD and the RNDP were summoned and told by the commission not to get involved in the current conflicts and that any party or individual would have action taken against them according to the rules and regulations of the commission if they were found involved in the renewed violence”, said U Myo Kyaw.

President U Kyaw Myint, Secretary U Myo Kyaw and Central executive member U Myo Swe from the ALD, and President Dr. Aye Maung, U Ba Shein and U Phe Than from the RNDP are said to have attended the meeting summoned by the election commission.

Thandwe: Four Muslim were arrested on Wednesday by security forces in a southern district of Arakan after some handmade weapons were discovered in a mosque, said residents and officials in the town.

A witness said the security force arrested the trustee of the mosque U Tin Aung and other three youths who were living in the mosque after the authority found several swords, slingshots, throwing arrows and iron sticks inthe mosque.

The incident took place a day before the Burmese authorities ordered people in strife-torn western Burma to surrender guns, swords and other weapons to the police within three days.

The four arrestees were produced before Thandwe Township court a day after arrest but the authority denied to issue bail to them.

The security forces combined of both police and army personnel, raided a monastery of Bodi Gom and Jamad mosque in Thandaw on Wednesday searching for weapons.

A local government official who did not want to disclose his name said that the security force could not found any weapons in the Monastery but several handmade weapons were found in the mosque of Jamad.

The authority is preparing to take action in accordance with criminal law, he said.

Narinjara contacted Thandwe police station over phone to get more information but no one picked up the phone despite the phone ringing.

The Burmese government announced on Thursday in state-run newspapers that people in Arakan state had to surrender guns, swords and other weapons to the police within three days or face legal action.

It has been learnt that a combined security force of police and army personnel have been searching for hand made weapons at many religious institutes like monasteries and mosques.

Burma_Myanmar: Muslim community scrutinized over citizenship status

Sittwe: According to reports from internal media a recently formed a team from the Burmese authority will start its plan to scrutinize individual families in the Muslim community from Pauk Taw township in Arakan today to decide whether they deserve citizenship or not.

Burmese high officials have formed the team of 18 members from several government departments to carry out the program effectively in line with the 1982 citizenship law.

According to sources, some officials from the immigration department, Nasaka (border security force), army, police, township and village level administrations are included in the team.

The team reportedly leaves today for Pauk Taw Township, 20 miles east of Arakan state capital Sittwe, to carry out the program at all Muslim villages. In Pauk Taw Township where there are five Muslim villages that are Sindet Maw, Kyi Ni Byin, Nga Wet Chaung, Sit Kae Byint and Ngat Chaung.

The program will be carried out in other Muslim areas throughout Arakan state one after one, said a
report quoting U Win Myint the spokesperson of the Arakan state government. He said that the program must be carried out fairly and independently in accordance with the 1982 citizenship law.

Many NGOs and international human rights activists have called for a repeal of the 1982 citizenship law in order to recognize Muslims in Arakan state as Burmese citizens.

The INGOs and activists say the 1982 law, which was issued during the reign of former dictator Gen. Ne Win, is not compatible with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights nor with Burma’s legal obligations under international treaties.

UPDATE :Alleged gunman Hsarm Pu (earlier written erroneously as Hsarm Wu and Hsarm Boon) is a Kieo (wonton soup) seller going from one place to another in a hand cart in Tachilek, according to a businessman working in the city. “He said he used to work for a Wa paw liang (financier) when he was in Mongla and Mongphen,” he told SHAN. “I don’t know whether he was ever trained in weapons or if he used to be in the UWSA. But if he were a gunman, why was he selling Kieo to make a living? It doesn’t make sense.” (SHAN)

• Hsarm Boon, a Shan arrested in Tachilek, had confessed that his assignment was to assassinate former PM Thaksin Shinawatra during his visit to the border city, according to Deputy PM Chalerm Yubamroong. The suspected mastermind is a retired general whose name begins with a “P”. (Agencies)
