However, the day before (18/11/2012), when the representatives of “The 88 Generation Students” Min Ko Naing and Ko Ko Gyi discussed with the Obama’s senior adviser for Multi-lateral affairs Samantha Power, his message to US’s president was:

1. To communicate more with Myanmar Military
2. To help modernize (and professionalize) Myanmar
3. Military because younger generation of Myanmar Military are eager to update their army to International standard About the Obama’s speech at Yangon University, below are Ko Ko Gyi ‘s remarks:

1. Welcome US President’s land mark visit to Myanmar and view his visit really encouraging for democratization process.
2. His speech is generally good and positive because US’s president has studied well about Myanmar situation.
3. However there are some different opinions over Human Rights issues: when talk about “human rights” one should not forget the desire of the majority in this country and naturally each country will prioritize the desire of the majority of the citizens when to apply /protect human rights values.

FTUB(Federation of Trade Unions Burma) Maung Maung fails at forming unions

FTUB’s (Federation of Trade Unions Burma) meeting to form new unions in six districts was unsuccessful. According to an attendee, the meeting failed because the representatives that were chosen to form new unions didn’t show up, even the FTUB Secretary, U Maung Maung, didn’t come when he learned no one was there.

Nineteen members did attend the meeting, which was held at the FTUB office in Hlinethaya Township in Yangon. Among those were, the Vice Chairman of FTUB U Than Lwin, the former Chairman of AFFM U Than Swe, and Master of Ceremonies U Tin Tun Aung.

FTUB has been working in exile for twenty years and receives funds from international donors such as the International Labor Organization (ILO), however, they have failed to set up any unions inside Myanmar. Many people won’t accept FTUB as a legitimate organization because it is not an official union.

According to some ex-FTUB members, the organization does not follow a true democratic system and their strict hierarchy has led to unbalanced internal decision making. They say that the leaders of FTUB use the funds they receive from international donors for their own personal use. This controversy has led to all members resigning, only the General Secretary and Vice Chairman are left. Recently, U Maung Maung made a visit to Yangon without consulting any members.

“U Maung Maung never told us he went to Yangon. And he’s never explained the financial situation to us, he’s even doing business with money that belongs to the organization,” one member said.

The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) will open their office in Yangon in 2013. FTUB, still led by U Maung Maung, is now trying to form unions to officially be a part of ITUC. Because FTUB has been unsuccessful in forming more unions he attempted to get unions that were affiliated with AFFM to leave and join FTUB.

Burma Myanmar Government uses prisoners to clear mines

Government troops used prisoners to clear landmines during a battle on November 14^th in Hpakant, Kachin State, according to an officer from KIA Brigade 2. “We planted mines to fight off the government troops that were coming from Myikyina to Hpakant and Lonkin village. The soldiers use the prisoners as porters, to carry their weapons, but the soldiers must have known we planted the mines along the motorway because they sent prisoners in ahead of them to set off the mines. We planted them in the exit way of Hpakant and Moe Gaung with a plan to attack five military trucks, but we didn’t know prisoners where inside the trucks, we thought they were soldiers,” he said.

Two prisoners died and fourteen were injured from the landmines, according to Myanmar Alin Newspaper.

On the same day, thirty-five government military tanks arrived on a crossroad at Moe Gaung in the village of Eight Mines. The government troops, Infantry Battalion (IB) 89, Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) 386 and 260, under the division 88, fought with KIA in the areas of Nanshan, Lagardyan, Gamatet, and Dike villages.

Using prisoners as porters is a violation of the “Supplementary Understanding” with the International Labor Organization (ILO), which aims to end forced labor and underage recruitment by 2015. The agreement between the Myanmar government and ILO approved steps to identify child soldiers in prison and to inspect certain constitutionally-authorized local militias.

The tactic of using prisoners in the frontlines to clear landmines is nothing new for Myanmar, it dates back to their communist party era and still continues today.

The free concert will be held on December 16^th in Yangon People’s Square with the iconic 2,600 year old history-laden Shwedagon Pagoda as the backdrop.
