(RCSS/SSA) Leader Lt-Gen Yawdserk said the way to lasting peace in Burm is a federal democratic system.

THURSDAY, 08 NOVEMBER 2012 10:52 S.H.A.N.

Speaking in the run-up to the Shan conference to be held on 26-28 November, leader of the Restoration Council of Shan State / Shan State Army (RCSS/SSA) Lt-Gen Yawdserk said the way to lasting peace in Burm is a federal democratic system.

“The country needs to adopt a federal system, genuine democracy and the right of the people to have a say in the amendment of the constitution,” he told SHAN on Monday. “Amendment should not be the exclusive prerogative of the 75 plus percent.”

According to the military drafted and approved constitution’s Article 436, most of the provisions can be amended by a vote of more than 75% of the representatives of the joint Upper and Lower House assembly (666 seats). The military occupies 25% of the seats in each house (110, 56).

He reiterated that any peace dialogue must begin with Panglong, the 1947 treaty between pre-independence Burma and Shan-Chin-Kachin areas, collectively known then as Frontier Areas. The main terms of the agreement were:

  • Frontier Areas representatives will be responsible for Frontier Areas affairs
  • Full autonomy
  • Rights and privileges fundamental in democratic countries
  • Financial autonomy

“We are of the same mind as the Kachins. Any dialogue for peace must begin with Panglong”, he said. “Because all the problems we are facing now started with someone reneging on it. We must take a look at it first, and if we find there is need to improve on it, we do it.”

However, Yawdserk, 53, regretted he would not be able to attend it. “One reason is I’m still recovering slowly from my illness,” he said. “Another is we already have our representatives (led by Col Sai La) in Rangoon to participate in it.”

He, together with several officers, have been suffering from bronchitis. Some of them are still being hospitalized.

He is careful that he does not offend the organizers and the other participants of the event. “It is a very important occasion, a key to peace and may well be the gateway to peace in our country,” he said. “We cannot just leave it to the government to handle the matter. Only if all the people take part in it, peace will be realized.”

The event is expected to be participated also by the Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD), Shan Nationalities Democratic Party (SNDP) and Shan State Progress Party / Shan State Army (SSPP/SSA), among others. On the government side, Vice President Sai Mawk Kham and ministers from the President’s Office, U Aung Min and U Soe Thein are expected to grace the event with their presence.

Burma_Bangladesh:Buddha statues found in Rohingya camp

Thu, Nov 8th, 2012 5:05 pm BdST

Cox’s Bazar, Nov 8 (bdnews24.com)— Three statues of Buddha believed to have been looted a month ago during a communal riot at Ramu have been recovered from an official camp for Rohingya.

Rapid Action Battalion recovered the statues on Wednesday from a market at Kutupalong refugee camp, said Maj Sarwar-e Alam, a RAB officer at Cox’s Bazar’s RAB-7 camp.

They also arrested two Rohingya men, he said.

The statues were found in a shop of Baktar market at Kutupalong. The shop is owned by Jafar Alam Dipu, 35, who was among the arrested. Another man, 22-year-old Imam Hossain, was also arrested as his associate.

The RAB official said the recovered statues were looted on Sep 29 and 30 during a communal riot at Ramu and Ukhia over a Facebook post , which was thought to be derogatory to Islam. A Buddhist man has been blamed for the post, but he said he did not do that, rather he was tagged by someone he does not know.

Locals told journalists later that Rohingya refugees were involved in the attack.

Built of bronze, the statues are 12, 9 and 5.8 cm in heights, weighing 475, 234 and 103 grams respectively.

Earlier a statue of Buddha was recovered from Ramu on Oct 25, following recovery of another one from Ukhia on Oct 4.

Burma-Bangladesh : “Fake Rohingyas” entering Western countries

While Bangladesh government has been refusing international plea of giving shelter to the “Rohingyas”, hundreds of Bangladeshi national are entering various Western countries and later proclaiming to be “Rohingyas” by producing fake certificates, which are sold to Bangladeshi nationals through an inter-country crime racket based in Akaran state. Weekly Blitz has already received specific evidence of such cases, where Bangladeshi nationals, who had been residing at their ancestral property in Dhaka and Tangail entered France with Bangladeshi passport and submitted application seeking political asylum by showing fake certificates issued by the local groups or NGOs in Arakan state. It was also learnt that, each of such fake certificates are sold in the black market for Bangladesh Taka 20,000-25,000 [US$ 250-275]. Any Bangladeshi national willing to obtain such fake certificate needs to contact local brokers of Arakan based NGOs in Cox’s Bazar district in Bangladesh and the fake certificate is handed over to the person within 10-15 hours in most cases. In recent months, the number of political asylums sought by “Rohingyas” in various Western nations has greatly increased. It may be mentioned here that, almost 99 percent of such applicants are falsely claiming to be “Rohingyas”.
It may be mentioned here that, as of 2012, 800,000 Bengali so called Rohingya live in Myanmar. Burmese historians such as Khin Maung Saw have claimed that the term ‘Rohingya’ was unknown before the 1950s. Another historian, Dr Maung Maung, notes that the word Rohingya is not used in the 1824 census, conducted by the British. Historian Aye Chan from Kanda University of International Studies states that the term “Rohingya” was created by descendants of Bengalis in 1950s who migrated into Arakan during colonial times. He also holds that the term cannot be found in any historical source in any language before the 1950s. However, he accepts that there may have been Muslim communities in Arakan before 1824.

Three fake Rohingyas traced seeking asylum in Germany

Following publication of the report titled ‘Fake Rohingyas entering Western countries’ in Blitz, we have been receiving specific information from various sources from a number of Western countries, where Bangladeshi nationals have already sought political asylum pretending to be Ronhigyas born in Arakan. According to our sources, only during 2011-2012, a few thousand Bengali fake Rohingyas already sought political asylum only in the European nations, while a significant number of so-called Rohingyas are also reportedly seeking asylum in Canada.
