A female university student was fatally shot believed by militants as she and three other students from the same institute were riding on two motorcycles on their way from the campus to their hostel in Narathiwat’s Muang district this late afternoon (Sunday).
A team of police and army troops was later dispatched to the scene of the shooting on a secondary road from Muang district to Cho Airong district where the found the victim, a sophomore of Narathiwat Srinagarind University, lying on the road with a bullet on the back of her head.
The victim, whose identity was not known at press time, was later rushed to the provincial hospital where she was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
The victim’s friends reportedly told police that as the four of them were riding back to their hostel in two motorcycles, one motorcycle approached then from behind and the pillion rider fired a short at the victim and pointed the same gun at the rest of them but it did not function and the motorbike sped away.
Police said that the victim’s father was shot dead in similar fashion three years ago.
