According to the announcement made today on state media which U Thein Sein regime called it prisoners’ amnesty but in reality it is a sham.
They don’t release the political prisoners but again reducing length of sentences to all the prisoners such as the prisoners serving death sentence to life sentence, for anyone serving more than 30 years to 30 years, for between 20-30 years to 20 years, below 20 years to one fourth of the sentences.
According to the sham amnesty the political prisoners like Min Ko Naing, Ko Ko Gyi and Khun Htun Oo will not be released but they must spend another 30 years behind bars.
If U Thein Sein regime were to claim that these political prisoners are imprisoned by the previous government and if they were to claim that they are the new civilian government then there must be no political prisoners in Burma.
If U Thein Sein regime is sincere in taking steps for democratic reform then they must release all the political prisoners who were unlawfully imprisoned.
The credibility of U Thein Sein regime’s promise of reform is now seriously questioned.
Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) calls for to release all remaining around 500 political prisoners immediately and unconditionally.
