India: Our security interests intertwined with Myanmar

24 January 2012

NEW DELHI, 24 JAN: The external affairs minister, Mr S M Krishna, today said India’s security interests are “intertwined” with that of Myanmar.

“We have traditional and civilisational relationship with Myanmar. Our trade links have been very ancient and our security interest are intertwined with Myanmar,” Mr Krishna said while welcoming the Myanmar foreign minister, Mr Wunna Maung Lwin, here.  His comments came in the backdrop of the “17th National Level Meeting to Strengthen Border Issues” between the two countries that was held in Nay Pyi Taw last week.

India and Myanmar have been steadily improving their relations in the recent past and the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh is expected to visit Myanmar this year.

A press release issued by the ministry of external affairs said, “ India welcomed the steps being taken by the Government of Myanmar towards national reconciliation and democratic transition. India also expressed its support for Myanmar to continue playing its due role among the comity of nations.”

Mr Lwin, who is here on an official visit, said it was a pleasure and honour to come here. “We have a very historic and long tradition of bilateral relations between our two countries. I look forward to future bilateral discussions about the strengthening and enhancing the existing bilateral relations in the field of political, security, social and economic development of the two countries,” he said.

Insurgent activities

India asked Myanmar to take stringent action against Indian insurgent groups (IIGs) who are reportedly planning large scale disturbances in the forthcoming elections in Manipur.

The Union home secretary, Mr R K Singh, who participated in the 17th National Level meeting told his counterpart that Indian insurgent groups are taking shelter in Myanmar.

“Home secretary especially mentioned that Indian insurgent groups are planning large scale disturbances in the forthcoming elections in 2012 in Manipur,” said a senior home ministry official. The home secretary also mentioned IIGs camps and training facilities in Myanmar and sought Myanmar’s cooperation in dealing with their activities.

Myanmar said it would not allow insurgents to use its territory to engage in any hostile activities against India, the home ministry official said. sns
