Bangalee settlers vandalised and set fire to houses, shops and a Buddhist temple of the indigenous people in Naniarchar upazila of Rangamati this morning.

According to officials, the settlers carried out the attack after leveling allegations of damaging pineapple seedlings against the indigenous people, reports a correspondent from Rangamati.

Mostafa Kamal, deputy commissioner of Rangamati, said some 4 lakh pineapple seedlings of the settlers were damaged in the incident.

“Seven shops, 10-12 houses and some jum houses of the ethnic people were set on fire,” the official said adding that a number of 43 people were affected in the incident.

However, the indigenous people claimed that the attackers torched over 50 houses in three villages – Suridapara, Camppara and Amtola.

Victim ethnic people said around 8:30 in the morning some 500 people from nearby Bogachhari village riding vehicles locally known Chandergari and on foot entered the villages and carried out the arson attack and ransacked the houses.

BURMA MYANMAR : Monks call on Rakhine families to fly Sasana flag to ‘protect’ religion and race

In the latest gesture opposing the use of the term ‘Rohingya’ by Bengalis to describe themselves in upcoming national census, Buddhist monks in Rakhine State are calling on Rakhine families to fly Sasana (religious) flags at their homes to show their commitment to protecting their religion and race.
Meanwhile, ethnic Rakhines in Yanbye and Manaung townships on Monday (March 24) joined the series of reactionary protests in Rakhine State.
“We cannot accept the use of ‘Rohingya’ since history clearly places them from southern Chittagong. If a race that has its own name uses another one, it means they are cheating. If the migrant Bengalis from Bangladesh attempt to identify themselves as minority ‘Rohingya’, they are trying to cheat the world,” said Thar Pwint from an ad hoc Rakhine State committee determined to prevent what it calls “racial identity fraud” by Bengalis.
Thar Pwint added that if one is not an ethnic national, one has to apply for citizenship on an individual basis. The whole race cannot become citizens, he said, unless they are deemed to be one of the national ethnic races.
“Ethnic nationals are entitled to citizen’s rights. The reason why [Bengalis] want to become citizens is that they want citizen’s rights. Since they are not ethnic nationals, they cannot request an autonomous region. So, the use of the word [Rohingya] is tantamount to insulting the state sovereignty,” he said.
“If ‘Rohingya’ is accepted, four or five million people will pop up with that identity. At that time, those Muslims who used to describe themselves as ethnic Bamar will even claim themselves as ‘Rohingya’. Because of those concerns, we are protesting. Should we accept everything other countries say?”

Myanmar authorities have provided single houses to Rakhine refugees who are staying in rescue camps in Sittway, Rakhine State, starting from July 19, according to local sources.

Nearly 700 single houses, schools and clinics are being constructed on the Mindarchak embankment in western part of Sittway.

“Thanks for building of single houses by the government. We are very pleased to stay at the houses. But, the roads have not been constructed yet. Regularly, the water level reaches at the foot of stairway. We are feeling now like visiting Inlay Lake. Mainly, we are worried about our children’s health,” said Aye Aye Than.

The government built single houses worth of about 30 million kyats per house and low-quality houses are also on the assistance program, said local residents. Currently, there are 812 displaced Rakhine families and over 100,000 displaced Bengali families.

The apartments for Bengali refugees will be built soon.
