Generation Wave leader,Wai Phyo arrested- photocredit GW

STATEMENT GW

Wai Phyo@Gali, Secretary of Generation Wave was arrested by Aung Lin Chief of Pyay Township police station (1) at 11:30 July 10th 2013. The police said they arrested him for a “Free Political Prisoners” poster campaign which he organized in July 2011. For that activity two other members of Generation Wave were arrested in July 2011 and sentenced for 3months imprisonment or 30,000 Kyats penalty in February 2012. Wai Phyo was escaped from arrest and police issued warrant on him since then.

On July 10th 2013, after arrest, police took him to Pyay Township court and asked permission from judge to detain him for interrogation for two weeks. Now he was under detention in jail at Pyay Township Police station (1). Police said they will take him to court again on 24th of this month and will prosecute him.

There were also several arrests, charges and long term imprisonments on some other human rights and political activists in recent months. So We (Generation Wave) would say government authorities’ repressions on activists could destroy the impression of democratic transition which was going by President’s lead, and it can decrease the trust on government from people of Myanmar and International community as well.

We, activists are raising the voices of people in the communities to government to know what’s happening in reality and find solutions for problems. That means we are just helping the government in democratic transition regarding President’s slogan “Parliament’s Voice must be People’s Voice”. Current repressions against activists could decrease civil societies’ participation and people voices could be deft as well. It could even stop the process of democratic transition of the country.

So we would like to recommend to government and authorities if they really believed in democracy and wanted to work together with people for building a new democratic society, trust civil societies and activists. And we call government to release immediately Ko Wai Phyo@Gali and all the political prisoners.

Activists who were arrested after staging a rally calling for the suspension of the controversial Latpadaung copper mine were released today on bail.

The six activists were arrested on 26 November in Rangoon and charged with sedition.

Meanwhile, two other activists, Moe Thway of Generation Wave and Aung Soe of a Rangoon-based civil society group, were also released on bail.

The two activists were arrested at a demonstration in Rangoon on 2 December that condemned the violent police assault on protest camps near the Letpadaung copper mine on 29 November.

It followed news that government forces used incendiary devices and water cannons to disperse peaceful protestors near the controversial Chinese-backed copper mine in Monywa, resulting in severe injuries. Several monks were severely burned in the crackdown.

The ceremony was attended by as many as 200 people, including activists from the political and the art communities.

Yan Yan Chan said that he attended the ceremony to honor the youth group, Generation Wave, who are working for the benefit of the country.

“I am not an official member of this organization, but I am a childhood friend with these guys. I believe they are working for our country and not doing negative or bad things. I am here to honor their fourth birthday.”

Generation Wave was founded on October 9, 2007 with the objective of creating a peaceful society that valued freedom, fairness and gave its citizens a higher standard of living. Generation Wave’s founding leader, Zaya Thaw was jail edin March 2008 for his political beliefs and activities, but was released three years later on March 2011 from Kawthoung Prison in an amnesty granted by President Thein Sein and leader of the current ruling party, Union Solidarity and Development Party. At the time, exile opposition groups, international human right groups and the international community criticized the amnesty as a stunt by the military backed civilian government. kic news 14.october 2011
