BREAKING NEWS

THAILAND : People’s Democratic Reform Committee _PDRC_Press Statement by PDRC Spokesperson Akanat Promphan: 14 Feb. 2014

Press Statement by PDRC Spokesperson Akanat Promphan: 14 Feb. 2014

Heavily armed police forces storm peaceful rally sites;
Centre for Maintaining “Peace and Order” attempts to incite violence a flop

(14 Feb. 2014) Early this morning, while anti-government demonstrators were merit-making for Macha Bucha day (a Buddhist holiday venerating the anniversary of Buddha’s first major sermon and the ordainment of 1,250 monks), heavily-armed law enforcement officials under the instructions of caretaker Labor Minister Chalerm Yubamrung, head of the Centre for Maintaining Peace and Order (CMPO), laid siege to demonstration sites at Misakawan-Makkhawan and Chaeng Wattana in an attempt to reclaim the areas.

Noted PDRC spokesperson Akanat Promphan: “Despite CMPO chief Chalerm’s vow to treat demonstrators like they were his ‘relatives,’ the weapons and equipment the police transported into the sites included handguns, bulletproof protective gear, and net guns (images #1 – #4). In addition, police officers attempted to instigate violence. The unarmed protesters responded by resisting peacefully, choosing to pray instead.” (image #5)

“We particularly applaud NSPRT (Network of Students and People for the Reform of Thailand) rally leaders and protestors, whose Misakawan-Makkhawan site was actually invaded by the police, for their level-headedness and calm,” Akanat complimented (images #6 – #7).

CMPO’s failed attempt to provoke violence to justify the declaration of the Emergency Decree is a desperate ploy by Yingluck Shinawatra’s caretaker government to distract public attention from her failed schemes on rice and rubber. It is also a political maneuver by CMPO chief Chalerm to retain his position. However, the operation was a failure.

“CMPO’s latest move under the groundless Emergency Decree was a flop,” lambasted Akanat. “At Government House (around Misakawan-Makkhawan) the majority of the NSPRT had joined a parade to deliberately avoid confrontation. Therefore, few protesters were present. Those that were stood their ground and refused to engage despite police threats. Demonstrators at Chaeng Wattana also stood their ground – their only response was praying (images #8 – #10). Chalerm was incoherent and rambling during his post-event briefing, and even tried to label rubber-band slingshots as artillery in a nonsensical attempt to show that protesters were armed.” (images #11 – #12)

Continued the PDRC spokesperson: “CMPO has also failed to intimidate the public from joining PDRC rallies. Today is the first day of PDRC’s ‘Thailand Love Fest’ and the streets have been flooded with supporters since early morning. CMPO’s terrorization of citizens has not affected and will not affect our demonstrations. We will continue our efforts to unseat Yingluck’s caretaker government and launch reform before the next elections in a peaceful, unarmed, and non-violent manner.” (images #13 – #14)

THAI PBS
The Royal Thai Army yesterday strongly slammed Robert Amsterdam, a lawyer of fugitive premier Thaksin Shinawatra, over his scathing article criticizing the Army of acting as a force that is hindering Thailand’s struggling for democracy.

Army spokesman Col Winthai Suwaree said the lawyer’s article on his Blog was based on his bias against the Thai Army and could never be regarded as honest criticism.

He said the article was defamatory and filled with groundless and baseless false information ever written by such a person with “narrow-mind” and ” hidden agenda” and evil intention to discredit the army.

The colonel said this lawyer will be considered an “undesirable person” for the country, he said.

Amsterdam wrote in his Blog an article entitled “Life under a Coup – the Thai Army’s Continual Threat to Thai Democracy”, accusing the Thai Army of having a “long and ignoble tradition of stymieing democracy, attacking civilians and meddling in politics.

He also criticized the role of the Army under the current political turmoil, and accused the Army chief of making veiled threats to elected lawmakers and did not help the caretaker government to defend what he  called the “political rights of the country’s citizens.”

In response to call by democratically-elected Thai government  for help, he said,  the Thai Army routinely go missing.

On the Army’s neutral role to the current political crisis, Amsterdam said “Of course, “neutral” in the Thai context, means that you tacitly and explicitly accept anti-democratic forces as a given, natural part of the political discourse. Neutrality in this instance is a non-existent opportunistic chimera created purely to divert a proper analysis of the real conditions within which the Thai Army operate.”

He went on saying “what is clear is that until the Thai Army is brought under lawful, accountable, democratic and civilian control it will act as a force hindering Thailand’s struggling – yet burgeoning – democracy;

THAILAND: ผีเสื้อประชาธิปไตย : “FRIENDS OF THAI PEOPLE, regard to the occurring political situation in Thailand, we, the people

Friends of Thai people,In regard to the occurring political situation in Thailand, we, the people who strongly oppose the entire Thaksin-backed regime, want to see his influence completely washed out from our beloved country.

We have lost trust in the Thai government, a puppet being controlled by fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, the brother of the current PM, Yingluck Shinawatra. With Thaksin’s ghost-like presence in Thailand, this has shown that we will never achieve our goal if his root has not been eradicated.

This has been the largest demonstration in Thailand’s history of almost a thousand year, two-times larger than in 1973 uprising and twenty-times than in 2010, millions of people have gathered at the democratic heart of Bangkok in Rajdamnoen and elsewhere across the country, as they can no longer accept the wide spread Thaksin-devil-regime present at all level.

We can no longer stand the government claiming its victory to election to the rights of the majoritarianism, especially in the Parliament, where they have been trying to make laws beneficial to the Shinawatra family and those involved in the circle. This is a dictatorship democracy against the provision of public will.

We can no longer stand to see the media still being under its control, putting the government in a good light. Finally, we can not stand to watch the country being plagued by Yingluck’s administration through its disastrous policies and the huge scale of corruption in Thai history.

We, the people, would like to see the Shinawatra family and cronies be dismissed from Thai politics.

The nationwide uprising in Bangkok and rural provinces, as well as the occupation of government premises and ministries across the country, are our intention to paralyse Yingluck Shinawatra’s government. We have always upheld our methods through peaceful means. We strongly oppose any movements of violence and we do not desire a military intervention.

We hope our friends all around the world will give us your support and bless us all.

From the hearts of Thai people.

ALERT!! Turkey to turn largest Byzantium monastery into mosque

The largest Byzantium monastery in Istanbul will be converted into a mosque after its restoration next year, Hurriyet Daily News said.

173168

The Monastery of Stoudios, also known as the İmrahor Monument, will be turned into a mosque and be titled İmrahor İlyas Bey Mosque. The renovation of the mosque, which forms part of the Hagia Sophia Museum, will follow the same fate as that of Hagia Sophia churches in Trabzon and İznik, which had been already turned into mosques.

“I wouldn’t like to speak as a member of a council but my personal opinion is that cultural heritage shouldn’t be reflected as an antagonistic heritage. If we reflect it like this, it will damage societies on a macro level,” said Laki Vingas, acting as representatives of the Directorate General of Foundations.

Vingas added that the issue creates grief within society, and it was not only the Greek community’s problem.

“Cultural heritage is universal heritages, meaning that they are humanity’s common heritage,” he said.

İmrahor’s conversion into a mosque came at a time debate continues as to whether to reopen Hagia Sophia as a place of worship. Most recently, Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç has expressed his hope to see the Hagia Sophia to be used as a mosque.

Vingas said: “My personal view is that when you are trying to create a new vision you should be careful not to create new problems for the future.”

The Monastery of Stoudios was founded in 462 by the consul Stoudios, a Roman patrician who had settled in Constantinople, and was consecrated to Saint John the Baptist. It was the most important monastery of Istanbul during the Byzantium era, also serving as the center of Byzantine intelligentsia. The basilica was converted to a mosque, during the period of Ottoman Sultan Bayezid II. After two major fires in the 18th and 19th centuries, the monastery was mostly destroyed. In 1946, it was turned into a museum in line with a ministerial cabinet decision.
