11 March 2014 (NNT) – The National Disaster Warning Center has issued a statement saying that a tropical storm is due to hit parts of the Northeast and the East hard on Tuesday and Wednesday. The center said residents in affected areas should closely follow weather updates for more information. The Meteorological Department has reported that a high pressure cell from China continues to prevail over the South China Sea and Thailand’s Northeast. Heavy rains can be expected in most parts of the country during the next two days. In the North and Notheast, temperatures are rising, with the mercury rising to 38 degree Celsius in some parts. Isolated rainshowers are also expected in the regions. In the South, strong winds are expected to generate up to 2-meter high waves and all ships should proceed with caution. Parts of Bangkok and its vicinity are to be lashed with rain later on Tuesday.

“Natural disaster is unpreventable. It needs to overcome the disasters with least damages through preparedness,” President U Thein Sein said at the coordination meeting for  Cyclone Mahasen held at the meeting hall of Union government at the Presidential Palace here this morning.

It was also attended by Vice-Presidents Dr Sai Mauk Kham and U Nyan Tun, the Union ministers, deputy ministers and departmental heads.

In his opening speech, the President said that the news on the Cyclone “Mahasen” is likely to cross between the west coasts of Rakhine and Bangladesh on 15 and 16 May, has been released. It is difficult to predict the storm as it can turn to the low pressure areas. Myanmar had experience of the storm “Nargis” hit in Ayeyawady Region on 2 May, 2008.

Necessary preparations are being made as the direction of the storm “Mahasen” is likely to turn to other states and regions. Officials have been instructed to carry out necessary preparedness in Magway Region.

There are four-step measures: preparedness  before the storm, tasks during the storm, recues and relief and rehabilitation after the storm.

It needs to carry out systematic measures. After the storm “Nargis”, National Disaster Preparedness Central Committee and work committee were formed and standing orders have been issued.

Maungtaw and Sittway in Rakhine State are most disaster-prone areas. There are over 100,000 victims in Sittway, Myebon, Pauktaw and Kyaukpyu townships. Among them, 40,000- 50,000 victims are in Sittway. Some victims are living at makeshift camps while others have been moved to the safe buildings.

MYANMAR: Observations at 18:00 16.5.2013, Cyclonic Storm (MAHASEN) has moved Northeast wards and centered at about (110) miles West-Northwest of Maungdaw

Cyclone News Issued at (18:00)hours MST on (16-5-2013), According to the observations at (17:30)hrs M.S.T today, Cyclonic Storm (MAHASEN) over North Bay of Bengal has crossed Bangladesh Coasts near Chittagong. It is forecast to move Northeast wards as land depression and weaken gradually.

 

MAHASEN-after landfall, it will become an inland storm affecting Kalemyo in northern Chin Division; Mawlaik, Ban Mauk in Northern Sagaing (Monywa, Salingyi, Yin Mar Bin) , cross from Bhamo-Myitkyina highway in Kachin State to reach Yunan Province on 18th May
