A brutal attack in Maungdaw Township in Rakhine State early morning on February 10 killed at least one Rakhine national and injured three others seriously, according to sources.
In what was described as “terrorist act”, the incident took place in Myothit village in Maungdaw, allgedly carried bout by a group of 15 Bengalis.
Disguising themselves as Nasaka members (Myanmar border security forces), the attackers arrived at a house of a Rakhine national named Ba Tin at around 00:15 AM that day. They used Myanmar language not Bengali to wake up him to attack.
He was seriously injured from the vicious attack. Another man named Maung Aye (aged 54) was killed at the scene when he went down from the upstairs to see what’s happening at that time. Gun shots were also heard, said local people.
Two villagers namely Saw Myint Aung (39) and Nay Lin Aung (23) were wounded by the gunshots when they came to give help.
The incident occurred in the village about 300 yards away from Nasaka Centre in Ngakura village.
“They killed them not for money or something valuable. Ngakura is a village where Bengalis came and went freely. So everyone needs to be cautious and the offenders need to be arrested. There are still no effective actions taken [by the authorities] against the violence occurring in Maungdaw,” said a Ngakura villager.
