More than 200 Myanmar workers in Yangon went on strike as a finished wood factory of Tawwin Family Company failed to comply with their demands though an employment tribunal has ruled in favour of the workers.
The strike occurred for the second time 18 days after their first protest on November 11. The workers made a five-point demand and Yangon Employment Tribunal ruled that the company was to fulfill four out of the five-point demand.

The workers demanded the employer not to send them outside workplaces, not to issue rules and regulations without their consent, to promptly make an employment contract and to issue social security membership cards within one week.
They rallied in front of the Department of Factories and General Labour Law Inspection in Insein Township and proceeded to the Mayangon Township department on Pyay Road. The crowd chanted a slogan asking authorities to tackle the issue.
While the workers were going on strike in Insein Township, Police Major Than Win, head of Township Police Force, threatened to take action in accord with the law.
The workers however responded that they were there not to stage a protest but to demand as the employer failed to follow the decision of the tribunal.
“We have asked them to disperse as they are assembling without permission. We also have warned them that they will face legal action if they are not to disperse until a warning period,” Police Major Than Win said.
Aung Khin, head of Yangon North District General Labour Law Inspection Department, said steps will be taken in coordination with authorities to meet the demands of workers. The factory owner will face legal action if he fails to follow the decision of the tribunal. Then, the crowd dispersed and proceeded to Mayangon Township department.
The workers continued assembling and went to the department though the police warned them of possible legal action if they failed to respect the laws.
The strike went on till evening, it was learnt.
