A fire balloon released at 1.15am yesterday crashed into the fire balloon competition ground on the second day of the Fire Balloon Festival in Shan State’s capital, Taunggyi, injuring 14 people, according to the authorities.
The Nya Mee Kyee (night fireworks) fire balloon titled “Khun Tan Mee” caught fire when it was 100 feet in the air and crashed into the ground. Ten men and four women watching the balloon competition suffered burn injuries from the fireworks and are currently receiving medical treatment as in-patients at Sao San Tun Hospital.
Among the injured, two men and a woman are in serious condition while the others suffered only minor injuries.
“The fire balloon crashed after its upper body opened at 100 feet in the air. When the fireworks started, the wick and gunpowder coil fell down and the gunpowder exploded on the ground. This happens every year so our judging panel has always cautioned the audience through the loudspeaker. We often announce to the audience not to go inside the competition ground. People don’t follow the rules and they go inside. That’s why many of them were injured,” said a member of the judging panel for the fire balloon competition.
The Taunggyi Fire Balloon Festival is an annual festival that draws huge crowds of local and foreign visitors. The festival runs from October 30 to November 6 and features a fire ballroom competition in three categories: day-time balloons in animal shapes, Sein Nar Pan (diamond earpiece) balloons and Nya Mee Kyi (night fireworks) balloons laden with firecrackers.

MYANMAR BURMA NLD : A federalist constitution can build trust for peace-making

EMG  A constitution that guarantees federalism is one that can build trust for peace among ethnic groups, according to the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD).

Nan Khin Htwe Myint, a member of the NLD’s chief executive committee, read the statement during the Trust-Building for Peace seminar held in Taunggyi, Shan state on Sunday.

“There need to be favourable conditions to establish a genuine Union, which the ethnic groups long for. Especially if provisions are guaranteed to establish a genuine Union, the ethnic groups will unconditionally trust the government. At present, the issue of whether to amend the current constitution or draw up a new constitution is under discussion. To enact federalism in the constitution is more important to trust-building for peace,” the statement said.

The statement called for additional peace talks, which Myanmar citizens expect, and the enactment of a federal principle in the constitution, which ethnic groups have requested.

If the 2008 Constitution is not amended, sustainable peace cannot be restored, the statement said. The NLD is gathering opinions of the ethnic parties to amend the constitution, and its findings will be shared with the public.

The Constitutional Amendment Committee, founded by the NLD, holds weekly discussions with ethnic representatives. NLD chairperson Aung San Suu Kyi is leading the party’s outreach with the ethnic groups.

phopthaw news  Approximately 200 representatives and senators from 40 Myanmar political parties are expected to attend a trust-building summit to be held this weekend in Taunggyi, capital of Shan State, according to Shan Nationalities Democratic Party (SNDP) secretary Sai Nyunt Lwin.

The summit, which received government approval last Sunday, is being organized by leaders from Shan, Kayah and Mon state political organizations, and will occur fromSeptember 21 until September 23. Party leaders are being called upon to discuss the national ceasefire process and how to best redraft the 2008 constitution into one that establishes Myanmar as a federal union.

This is the first summit of its kind to be held in Shan state. Originally spearheaded by the SNDP, its organizing committee expanded to include Kayah and Mon state parties in order to attract a wider audience of attendees.

The following parties have been invited to attend: Wa Democratic Party, Shan State Progress Party/Shan State Army (SSPP/SSA), Restoration Council of Shan State (RCSS), Kayan New Land Party (KNLP), Kayan National Party, Mon Democracy Party, All Mon Region Democracy Party, New Mon State Party (NMSP), Danu National Democracy Party, Inn National Development Party, Two Kokant parties, Arakan League for Democracy (ALD), Rakhine Nationalities Development Party (RNDP), Karen National Union (KNU), Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA), Chin National Front (CNF), Zome Democracy Federation, 88 Generation Students Group and a number of social organizations.

Most active ethnic political parties in Myanmar wish to create a new constitution to achieve the state-level autonomy promised by the 1948 Panglong Agreement, which was signed by Shan, Kachin, and Chin state representatives and government leaders.

PRESS RELEASE : Northern Shan farmers call for Chinese pipelines to be removed from their lands-ENGL-BUR-THAI

Fact sheets and a press release prepared by the coalition of Shan community based organizations were delivered to the Chinese consulate in Chiangmai by Thai police officers, after Chinese officials failed to show up at the gate today.

The Shan CSOs had held a press conference at the Chiangmai University Academic Services Center (Uniserv) before coming to the consulate without prior notice. “Our main purpose is just to provide information,” said Sai Khur Hseng, one of the panelists. “We are not here to stage a protest.”

The same message was delivered to the Shan State government by representatives of the Northern Shan Farmers Committee in Taunggyi this morning.

They have demanded that the pipelines “be taken out and our lands restored to their original condition.”

“Well, I don’t think the Chinese (government) will listen to you,” commented a Thai police officer. He didn’t elaborate why he thought so.

The Thai police had offered to deliver the documents for the Shan CSOs after an hour long standoff under Chiangmai’s burning sun.
