King Norodom Sihamoni has granted a royal pardon to Thai yellow-shirt activist Veera Somkwamkid, who has been imprisoned in Cambodia since 2010, an assistant to Prime Minister Hun Sen said Tuesday.

The announcement was made during a visit to Cambodia by Thailand’s acting Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow, who made the request for the pardon of Mr. Veera on behalf of General Prayuth Chan-ocha, head of the Thai military government.

He [Mr. Somkwamkid] was released earlier today and he will go back home with the delegate with His Excellency Sihasak’s delegation tomorrow,” Mr. Sophalleth added.

Mr. Veera and his colleague Ratree Pipattanapaiboon, both ultra-nationalist Thai activists, were sentenced to eight and six years, respectively, in December 2010 for spying, entering the country illegally, and entering a restricted military area in Banteay Meanchey province.

Ms. Ratree was released by a royal pardon in February 2013 along with 412 other prisoners to mark the cremation of the late King Father Norodom Sihanouk.

KACHIN NEWS :Brang-Shawng-release

KACHIN LAND NEWS 23.JULY 2013

Lahtaw Brang Shawng, a Kachin civilian who was accused of being a KIA officer, has been released from Myitkyina prison today. A Myitkyina court last week sentenced Lahtaw Brang Shawng to two years in prison. He has already been in detention for more than a year since military intelligent officers arrested him from Janmai Kawng IDP camp on June 17, 2012.

Ministers U Aung Min and U Ohn Myint accompanied Lahtaw Brang Shawng and hand him over to his family and IDP camp authorities. U Aung Min previously said he would release Brang Shawng in a week after his sentence during a meeting with Kachin IDPs in Myitkyina in May.

Local sources say 13 prisoners from Myitkyina prison and 14 other prisoners from Bhamo and Putao prisons have been released today. U Aung Min said there are a total of 70 prisoners being released nation-wide in today’s release.

Myanmar fishermen return from India after serving prison

CREDIT EMG

Over a hundred Myanmar fishermen have returned home yesterday after serving prison terms in India for illegal fishing and entering foreign waters, according to local sources.

Most of the seamen are from Ayeyarwady Region, one from Yangon Region, five from Rakhine State, nine from Tanintharyi Region and one from Mon State. Some of them claimed they accidentally entered Indian waters due to unexpected storms and engine failures while others were arrested for illegal fishing.

“I had served two years and six months in prison terms there for illegal fishing. I’m still not sure what to do for my living here. But I will never do that fishing job again,” said Myint Zaw, a seaman from Rakhine.

Myanmar Airways International transported them back to home free of charge with cooperative support from the Ministry of Social Welfare and Myanmar Fisheries Federation.

“The Indian embassy informed us about them who have served the prison terms there to call them back. Immigration Department’s officials went there to check whether they are Myanmar nationals or not. When they confirmed, we arranged their return back home,” said Aung Kyaw Win, deputy director from Ministry of Social Welfare and Resettlement.

Reports say there are still more than 800 Myanmar seamen still in India’s prisons for illegal fishing. Official figures show more than 3000 seamen had returned from India after serving prison terms from 2000 to 2011.

Burma: missing arakan army chief release from chinese police custody

29.january 2013

Dhaka: Arakan Army Chief Colonel Tun Mrat Naing was released on Sunday from Chinese police custody after he was missing for a few days without any communication with his colleagues, said Lt Colonel Dr. Nyo Twan Awng, the militia’s second-in-command.

“We got re-communication with him on Sunday morning. He was released by the Chinese police after some of our Burmese ethnic ally leaders negotiated with the Chinese police. Now he has arrived at a safety place,” said Dr Nyo Twan Awng.

Colonel Tun Mrat Naing was detained by Chinese police at Kumin airport in Yunan province in China on 25 January just after he arrived from Thailand.

Arakanese politicians from many Arakanese parties held a four day long workshop for the Arakanese future in Chiang Mai where Colonel Tun Mrat Naing attended.

The reason behind the arrest of him by the Chinese police is still unclear.

“We all were anxious for him after he went missing since 25 January. We would like to express thanks here to our alliance leaders who were working for our leader’s release from Chinese police custody. We also are thankful to well wishers and our communities for their anxious thoughts and prayers for our leader” said Dr Nyo Twan Awng.

A group of patriotic Arakanese young people led by the Colonel founded Arakan Army in the area of Kachine Independent Organization in 2008 to fight the central Burmese government to protect Arakan people, and to establish peace and justice and freedom and development.

Burma releases eight ‘copper mine’ protesters

Activists who were arrested after staging a rally calling for the suspension of the controversial Latpadaung copper mine were released today on bail.

The six activists were arrested on 26 November in Rangoon and charged with sedition.

Meanwhile, two other activists, Moe Thway of Generation Wave and Aung Soe of a Rangoon-based civil society group, were also released on bail.

The two activists were arrested at a demonstration in Rangoon on 2 December that condemned the violent police assault on protest camps near the Letpadaung copper mine on 29 November.

It followed news that government forces used incendiary devices and water cannons to disperse peaceful protestors near the controversial Chinese-backed copper mine in Monywa, resulting in severe injuries. Several monks were severely burned in the crackdown.
