#EU ‘#deeply #regrets’ #use of #force #against #Myanmar #protesters

(BRUSSELS) – The EU criticised Myanmar on Tuesday after baton-wielding police dispersed a student rally and arrested dozens of protesters in a crackdown which has raised fears of a return to junta-era repression.

The 28-nation bloc also defended its 2013 decision to launch a 10-million-euro programme to train Myanmar police in dealing with demonstrations, saying it was part of efforts to support reform.

“The European Union is following with concern recent clashes in relation to ongoing protests and deeply regrets the use of force against peaceful demonstrators,” a spokeswoman said in an email to AFP.

Myanmar police carted away two truckloads of protesters after violently breaking up the rally in the central town of Letpadan, according to an AFP reporter at the scene, and police said 127 were arrested.

The crackdown comes just days after authorities used violence to end a rally in support of the students in the commercial hub of Yangon, prompting condemnation from rights campaigners.

The EU said the clashes showed the need for further reform by Myanmar’s military-dominated government but insisted that it was right to launch the training programme for riot police.

“Since the beginning of the EU project, progress has been made,” the spokeswoman said.

“When it comes to EU-trained police units, a difference in approach has been acknowledged, including by human rights organisations.

“Change, however, does not happen overnight, it requires a shift in the mindset and recent events confirm the necessity of more and continued reform.”

The EU “remains committed to supporting positive change in Myanmar in general — and the important process of reforming the police in particular”, the spokeswoman added.

REMARKS BY PRESIDENT OBAMA BEFORE U.S.-ASEAN SUMMIT MEETING
Myanmar International Convention Center
Naypyitaw, Burma

12:45 P.M. MMT

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Thank you very much, Mr. President. It is a great pleasure to be back in this beautiful country and to once again have the opportunity to consult closely with all of our ASEAN partners.

Today, I’m looking forward to continuing to build on the strong partnership between ASEAN and the United States that already exists. President Thein Sein, I want to thank you for your hospitality and for bringing together this excellent summit. I think Myanmar has done a tremendous job chairing ASEAN this year and has shown solid leadership on issues of critical importance to the entire region.

As has already been noted in the EAS that we just attended, ASEAN is at the heart of Asia’s rapid growth. Its people are ambitious and energetic and talented, and I’m looking forward to spending time tomorrow with young leaders from across Southeast Asia. And as a strong relationship between the United States and ASEAN is essential to realizing our shared vision for the future of the Asia Pacific, I intend to continue to invest in these efforts not only during our summits but, more importantly, on a day-to-day basis.

During the past six years, we’ve made great strides in elevating and expanding this partnership, but I think we all agree we can still do more. And that’s why the United States is committed to strengthening ASEAN, both as an institution and as a community of nations bound by our shared interests and values. And so whether we are working on economic issues, social issues, security issues, disaster relief, enhancing educational opportunities for all the young people of the region, strengthening our public health infrastructure to ensure that we can handle an outbreak of disease –- in each and every one of these cases, I believe that we are going to be stronger together than when we act individually. And we are very much invested in building the capacity not just of individual nations but between nations so that together we can become stronger, more capable partners to each other and meet the regional and global challenges ahead. So thank you very much, Mr. President, and I look forward to hearing the remarks from our fellow leaders.

#MA #THANDAR #Par #Gyi’s #wife #points out #errors in #military #statement

Slain journalist Par Gyi’s wife says some wrong information were included in a press release issued on October 31 by the Myanmar Press Council (Interim), about her husband’s death.
Thandar, wife of late Aung Kyaw Naing who was also known as Par Gyi, says she disagreed with the statement strongly, which included discussions between Army General Aung Ye Win and officials from the council about the freelance reporter’s death.
The statement, which referred to Par Gyi as Aung Naing (not Aung Kyaw Naing) throughout, says he admitted he was Aung Naing, communication in-charge of the Khlohtoobaw Karen Organisation (KKO) and he had got divorced in 2012 from his wife, who lived in Mae Sot, after the army in cooperation with police had detained him on September 30 at a jetty in Mon State’s Kyaikmayaw township.
“He was never a member of an armed group. And I oppose the statement that says I’m his ex-wife. We had been together till his death. By making this statement, the Defence Ministry is causing mental anguish to my three children,” Thandar said.
She also said the statement was completely wrong to describe her as the ex-wife of Par Gyi.

This message is delivered to the entire American nation, namely the Congress which is its legislative power, the President (its executive power), the Supreme Court and other federal courts (its judicial power), and the entire population of the US.
Point 1. Intervention/interference with internal affairs of other countries. The US must refrain from intervening in and or interfering with the internal affairs of other countries. You are reminded to look at your own history since the day of the Declaration of Independence on 4th July 1776, American civil war during 1861-1863, the abolition of slavery, the assassination of presidents, and several other events up to this date that no other countries have ever intervened in or interfered with your internal affairs at all. No country points a finger at you and tells you how to run your country. You must understand and believe that a country free of intervention from outside will survive and prosper like yours. We demand your answer whether you welcome any intervention or interference with the affairs of your own country like what you did in Vietnam and eventually got thrown out; like your interference in Afghanistan, like your unjustified invasion of Iraq by the American troops to overthrow its elected government and killed its president. You must also answer what justification have you to intervene in Syria, Libya and Egypt. Why did you support the coup which toppled the elected governments of Ukrain and Egypt? Why did you not support the coup which threw out the elected government of Thailand the previous week? It is surprised that you have no knowledge, through your CIA or otherwise, that 1) the Yingluk government of Thailand came from a manipulated election by way of fraudulent and massive vote buying and rigging; 2) the Yingluk government of Thailand overthrown by military the previous week was a proxy government manipulated by her own brother who has been taking a self-imposed exile only to defy imprisonment ruling of the High court, to evade several arrest warrants and court cases on corruption; 3) the Yingluk government had no legitimate right to rule the country because it refused to accept the rulings of Constitutional Court and other courts; 4) the Yingluk government and its cronies was the most corrupt one in the world; 5) the Yingluk government had bought up all the police force and ran the country the police state; 6) the Yingluk government had bought up DSI which is the same as your FBI to attack its opposition; 7) the Yingluk government killed and attacked innocent people on the streets of Bangkok; 8) The Yingluk government and its cronies accumulated tons of war weapons in various locations to stage a civil war; 9) the Yingluk government had a second plan in its drawer –country partition or setting up a government in exile; and many other great wrongs not listed here. Therefore it is a total absurdity for you to go on to support such a government even if you may have a slightest knowledge of any of the foregoings. PDRC Statement by Suthep Thaugsuban: 27 Jan. 2014

1656397_737420672943419_794575564_n

Good afternoon. I am here today to explain PDRC’s views on the continuation of Bangkok shutdown to the public. Thank you for joining today’s briefing.

– No negotiations with Chalerm’s renegade group

The People’s Democratic Reform Committee exists to safeguard the public interest. The Thaksin regime, on the other hand, serves only itself to the extent that it has denounced the rule of law. The proxy government under Yingluck Shinawatra is no longer legitimate. The declaration of the emergency decree was also groundless and thus illegal. Therefore, orders from the renegade group of Chalerm Yubamrung (CMPO: Centre for Maintaining Peace and Order) are unlawful.

As a result, Chalerm’s offer for the CMPO to negotiate the return of protest sites on specific dates warrants no attention. It is also self-contradictory because Chalerm simultaneously declared he would take siege of various sites and arrest all PDRC core leaders, speakers, and protesters within the next 72 hours. It is obvious that Chalerm’s offer to “negotiate” is simply an excuse for him to quash peaceful protesters and suppress their constitutional right to express themselves. The outcome has been predetermined.

We thus reject any and all attempts to “negotiate” by this group. However, we are willing to accommodate those citizens affected by the shutdown to ease their discomfort.

– The PDRC exists to serve the public; we will continue peaceful demonstrations Continue reading “THAILAND : PDRC Statement by Suthep Thaugsuban: 27 Jan. 2014 Good afternoon. I am here today to explain PDRC’s views on the continuation of Bangkok shutdown to the public.”
