There is also a political saying that goes: “A politician thinks of the next election; a statesman thinks of the next generation”. Time therefore will decide whether these reforms are for the next election or the next generation. At Eleven Media we urge the government to try to bring about real change and reform in a practical manner for the public wellbeing.
It has been over two and a half years since Thein Sein’s government took office in 2011. Since then, the president and his cabinet members delivered a series of speeches which seemed positive and encouraging. They have repeatedly promised political change. Can such reform process be implemented? Is Myanmar really on the road to progress? Are the people enjoying fruits of these changes? We don’t have a happy answer as of yet to any of these questions. Indeed, Myanmar’s reform process has yet to see progress. As the saying that goes: “There is much water but no fish”.
Some say that the government should not be blamed for not being able to bring a complete change to a nation that has experienced dictatorial rule for over 50 years. Political change in a nation is said to take two main forms: evolution and revolution. Seeing how Myanmar has lagged behind other nations for 50 years, is it not the time to prefer evolution over revolution?
Actually, there is no sign of real progress in the reform process the government is talking about. To what extent have the pubic enjoyed fruits of the executive, legislative and judicial reforms? For example, the government has repeated claims to fight against corruption, but can we see a real progress in anti-corruption efforts? The answer is that Myanmar is still on the list of top five corrupt countries in the world.
