The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) yesterday passed the anti human trafficking bill into law that sees for the first time in history death sentence for trafficker in case of victim to such trafficking dies.
The overwhelming passage of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Bill by the NLA came one day after Britain also passed a law that imposes life imprisonment on traffickers.
The new law sees a change that allows state prosecutors to seek the death penalty and fines of up to 400,000 baht for those convicted of trafficking offences.
Head of the commission in charge of the law amendment Pol Gen Chatchawan Suksomjit said the new law stated that if the trafficked person dies in the hands of the trafficker then either life imprisonment or death sentence could now be handed down.
In case of serious injuries are inflicted on victims, those responsible can be sentenced up to 20 years in prison and fined up to 400,000 baht, he said.
