Angola Bans Islam, Destroys Mosques

ANGOLA ISLAM

LUANDA – According to several Angolan newspapers, Angola has become the first country in the world to ban Islam and Muslims, taking first measures by destroying mosques in the country.

“The process of legalization of Islamhas not been approved by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, their mosques would be closed until further notice,” Rosa Cruz e Silva, the Angolan Minister of Culture, was quoted by Agence Ecofin on Friday, November 22.

Silva comments were given during her visit last Tuesday to the 6th Commission of the National Assembly.

The Angolan government would also be obliged to update the current national context as a way of fighting the rise of new religious congregation whose religious assemblies are contrary to “habits and customs to Angolan culture,” Silva added.

Same as Islam, Silva announced that there are at least 194 religious sects that were not authorized to have their activities.

NLD has denied providing cash to rebuild destroyed mosques amid a flurry of online rumours.

EMG

Myanmar’s opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) has denied providing cash to rebuild destroyed mosques amid a flurry of online rumours.

The story was first posted on Facebook and claimed that money donated for opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi’s birthday would be donated to reconstruct the mosques destroyed in the country’s communal violence.

“That news is just a rumour. It’s not at all true,” said Nyan Win, an NLD Central Executive Committee member told Eleven Media.

He added that the money donated was going to the party’s Health Network and Education Network as well as the Daw Khin Kyi Foundation.

The Facebook account of Thway Thitsa, long known to spread reactionary propaganda, initially posted the rumour, which soon went viral on other social media and Facebook accounts.

The malignant spread of misinformation via social media, especially Facebook, has been on the rise in Myanmar. Many accounts have been linked to spreading reactionary propaganda and personal attacks against the reform-minded government, opposition leaders and journalists.

Similar fear-mongering and spread of misinformation was also used in the past.

When elections took place in 1990, rumours spread that the NLD was infiltrated by communists. Now behind-the-scene propagandists have now turned to fabricating news that Muslims are influencing the party.

“There are those who are jealous of the NLD. They will write slanderous news. The people have brains and can decide. The public trust in Aung San Suu Kyi will not decline because of such attacks,” said Aye Thein from NLD’s Education Network.

Buddhist monk U Wirathu, who has a large following and is widely regarded as the leader of ‘969’ movement, has branded the NLD as the ‘Mutdaung party’ or the party filled with Muslims.

Others have been quick to attack the party for not supporting the Buddhist cause.

This is not the first time in Myanmar for propagandists to resort to rumour spreading and misinformation. Only now the tools are the internet, social media and Facebook and the rumours are bent on stirring religious hatred.

The NLD, however, has remained steadfast, choosing to believe in their supporters’ convictions and ability to sift the truth out amongst all the rumour and hate-speech.

“I only assume that those attackers have a low standard of opinions and conviction,” said executive party member Han Tha Myint.

Most Indonesian Mosques Don’t Have Building Permits: Komnas HAM

(AS IN BURMA,MYANMAR)

The National Commission on Human Rights on Tuesday said that 85 percent of Indonesia’s houses of worship do not have building permits, with most of them being mosques.

“The majority [of houses of worship without building permits] are mosques,” Imdadun Rahmat, the deputy of chairman of the commission (Komnas HAM), said on Tuesday, as quoted by Tempo.co. “If you check, most religious buildings in villages have no building permits, even if their buildings are close to the urban ward chief.”

Imdadun noted that most religious buildings that obtained building permits were located in major cities.

Many houses of worship are built based on the needs of nearby residents, and the processes of obtaining a permit and conforming to building codes are often overlooked, he said.

Regardless, Imdadun said that rather than dismantling the buildings, the government should protect them given their importance to local populations.

Several churches have been shut down or destroyed by local governments over the past few years for not having proper building permits. The HKBP Taman Sari church in Setu, Bekasi district, was demolished last month by the Bekasi district administration. Established in 1998, the church was in the process of obtaining a building permit, but the district chief, Neneng Hasanah Yasin, decided to demolish the building amid demonstrations by the hard-line Taman Sari Islamic Peoples Forum (FUIT).

Earlier this month, the GKI Gembrong church, located in Bekasi, was sealed by the government for the same reason.

The issuance of a building permit does not guarantee a structure’s existence, though. GKI Yasmin, a protestant church in Bogor, obtained the correct license but was later stripped of it by the city’s mayor, who claimed that the church fabricated an agreement with local residents.

The Supreme Court ordered the local government to reopen the church, but the city hasn’t followed through yet.
