There are no words to describe the depths of our sorrow and loss.
We believe that our girls, Bailey Sage Meola, and Sydney Jo Schumacher, perished during the earthquake and catastrophic landslide in the Langtang region of Nepal. When Sydney’s brothers, Will and Paul, searched the entirety of the trek, and saw the immense and unfathomable destruction and devastation, it became clear that there was no chance our girls had survived. Although our strong desire has been to hear final confirmation from the US Embassy, and to receive our beloved girls’ remains, we haven’t, and may never.
We have been profoundly moved by the support and love we have received from near and from far, far away. You have all had your part in helping us move through these dark days. Thank you.

It is with great sadness that I share this news we received from the SAR Dogs Nepal as to the status of the Langtang Landslide Recovery Mission. It seems the likelihood of any type of recovery in the area of Langtang is now impossible as a result of the second earthquake.

News received states;

The second quake has caused more slides and damages in and around the Gosaikunda-Langtang-Helambu region.

Horrible disfigured mountain slopes have caused huge countless landslides yesterday and entire villages are now buried.

Langtang Village is now buried under a further 300 metres high and 600 meters wide hill of debris – a new smaller mountain of its own inside the valley.

Langtang Valley is vanishing slowly from the map. The pressure by the Indian sub continental drift on the two mountain ranges at both the sides of the west to east situated canyon is absolutely immeasurable”.

We questioned the possibility of proceeding with a search and recovery effort for the areas of Kyangin Gompa, Thangsyap and Ghora Tabel – the last know location of many other loved ones still missing.

The response from SAR Dogs Nepal came as follows;

“It is out of the question that the search & recovery mission into Langtang Canyon (Valley) will resume. The Army has now taken every living human out, the place is empty. The army and local administration have declared it a restricted area, entering is not possible anymore.

There have been 3 more landslides on top of that first landslide and the entire area is still shaking and moving continuously.

This is the grim reality we face now. Also, the Monsoon is now coming in 15-20 days – this will cause serial landslides, the worse is still to come…”

It seems clear despite our hope to perhaps find someone alive in the Langtang region, to perhaps recover maybe at least one more person for one family, no amount of will can change this harsh reality, and I am so very sorry. Sorry for the young backpackers and trekkers, the beautiful people of the villages who thrived on this industry and the families across the world in pain.

If I can be of any assistance to family, please feel free to contact me.

Kindest regards

Veronica Hey

1st of January 2015 police and rescue teams were called to a bungalow on Koh Tao where the body of a 29 year old French man was found hanging from the ceiling of his rented bungalow. Suspicions arose over what appeared to be a suicide when on further inspection it was discovered the man’s hands were tied behind his back. Wounds were discovered around the man’s neck as well as two 5cm lacerations to his arm, one near his wrist the second near to his elbow. It is thought the man had been dead for around two hours.

The door to the man’s bungalow, later identified as Dmitri, was open and there was no sign of a struggle. Police and rescue workers found a note on the man’s bed that suggested a recent love affair may have come to an end and that the man recently lost one of his grandparents.

PRESIDENT OFFICE MYANMAR: Coordination meeting for implementation of Visa Policy in Myanmar held

Smooth issuance of visa to foreigners is crucial as Myanmar will take ASEAN Chairmanship in 2014,” said Vice-President U Nyan Tun at a coordination meeting for implementation of Visa Policy in Myanmar, at the Ministry of Immigration and Population, here, this afternoon.

The Union Government has designated Ministry of Immigration and Population as focal ministry. Myanmar issues six kinds of visa to foreigners. Visa on Arrival has been granted for citizens from 50 countries till now.

The Vice-President called for a change in visa system of the country, restating the instructions of the President on cooperation between the Immigration and Population Ministry and personnel concerned on border security, foreign relations, and border trade.

He stressed the need for systematic tracking of disobedient foreigners to preserve the national cultural characteristics and protect the sovereignty of the State as well as the simple and systematic visa procedures for foreign technicians and tourists that can help improve economic performance of the country.

He invited recommendations from various aspects of those present.

Union Minister U Khin Yi then explained plans for adoption of visa policy, followed by colourful suggestions of those present.

Then the meeting came to an end with concluding remarks of the Vice-President. The coordination meeting was also attended by Union Ministers Lt-Gen Ko Ko, U Wunna Maung Lwin and U Tin Naing Thein and officials.

TO QUINTANA: 1982 Myanmar Citizenship Law requires no amendments as it prevents an illegal influx of foreigners

The 1982 Myanmar Citizenship Law requires no amendments as it prevents an illegal influx of foreigners, MPs, legal experts and representatives of ethnic groups said in response to a United Nations envoy’s call to amend the law.

Thomas Quintana, the UN’s Human Rights envoy to Myanmar, on Saturday called on Parliament to amend the law to ensure people do not face discrimination based on citizenship and faith.

Quintana’s remarks drew a swift rebuke. Myanmar has its own legislative body to write, pass, amend or abolish laws and he has no right to intrude in the process, MPs, legal experts and representatives of ethnic groups said.

“This law is vitally important for our national people,” legal expert and MP Thein Nyunt said.  “Myanmar is located between China with a population of 1.3 billion, India with over one billion people and Bangladesh with 160 million people,” he said.

“Bangladesh is only about the size of Shan State. This is why our citizenship law must be firm. This is to say that the law must prevent non-citizens from entering easily. We must make sure that people of mixed race do not decide our citizenship policies,” Thein Nyunt said.

“The present law states that a fine of 50,000 kyats must be paid by offenders [who cross the border illegally]. We should change it to 500,000 or five million kyats. But the remaining provisions should remain as they are,” Thein Nyunt added.

Dr. Aye Maung, MP and chairman of Rakhine Nationals Progressive Party, agreed that Myanmar’scitizenship law should be considered in terms of its context. “The 1982 Citizenship Law is only concerned with Myanmar people. The citizenship law of a country has to be passed based on its geo-political situation. It may be different from that of the US or other countries. That should be understood,” he said.
