Turkey: NGO; over 100,000 sex slaves, half are children

thanks to the “peaceful” religion

ANSAmed) – ISTANBU – There are over 100,000 women working as sex slaves in Turkey, of which half are children, a non-governmental organization has revealed in an extensive report on prostitution in the country quoted Saturday by daily Hurriyet. Up to 3,000 prostitutes work in brothels located in 55 of the 81 provinces of Turkey and 15,000 other registered prostitutes work with an official document, according to the report prepared by Sefkat-Der, a civil association founded to help marginalized segments of society. The most shocking aspect of the report, however, is that the number of women selling sex on the streets has climbed to over 100,000, half of whom are children. It stated that many underage girls from impoverished families, especially in eastern and southeastern provinces, had become victims of the “prostitution mafia.” Vulnerable children who have been the victim of abuse inside their own family, orphans, and mentally challenged children are also often prey for organized crime rings. The report added that women up to the age of 60 are working in brothels. Sefkat-Der attracted media attention last spring when it filed a petition to Parliament to ask for permission to open a brothel employing males, in protest at brothels where women are employed. For Sefkat-Der and women’s associations, the fact that there are more brothels in Turkey than women’s shelters has long been a cause of criticism of both the state and local government. (ANSAmed).

Following his meeting with Burmese Minister for the President’s Office, U Aung Min, the Foreign Secretary said:

It was a pleasure to welcome His Excellency Aung Min to the United Kingdom, and to congratulate him on his role in the remarkable changes we have seen in Burma.

We discussed the peace process in Burma, which has seen ceasefires with ten out of eleven armed groups across the country after years of fighting, and how British experts could best support further progress. We agreed on the need to take forward negotiations to achieve a permanent ceasefire in Kachin State, and to address the hostility behind the recent outbreak of anti-Muslim violence in Meiktila. The British Government will continue to support work bringing different faith communities in Burma together.

We discussed the serious humanitarian situation in Rakhine State and the importance of ensuring that the Rohingya community, which has lived in Burma for many centuries, is accorded full citizenship rights in line with international standards.

Last week G8 foreign ministers endorsed the Burmese Government’s commitment to responsible investment, and today I made clear that the British Government will continue to do all it can to encourage Burma’s transition to a free and prosperous society.

On 22nd February 2013, British migrant and labour rights activist Mr Andy Hall was informed that civil and criminal lawsuits had been filed against him, based on a complaint filed by a Thai fruit processor, Natural Fruit Company Ltd., based in Prachuapkirikhan Province, Thailand.

In the civil case filed against him, Andy Hall is accused of defaming and damaging Natural Fruit Company Ltd.’s reputation by “broadcasting false statements to public media” following the publication of a report to which he contributed. If convicted, he faces a fine of 300 million Baht (approx €7.7 million).

In addition, a criminal lawsuit was also lodged against Andy Hall on the charge of broadcasting false statements, also based on a complaint filed by the Natural Fruit Company Ltd. If found guilty under these charges, he could be imprisoned for a maximum of 7 years per count, with an additional fine of 200,000 Baht (approx €5,100).

The legal action follows a report in January 2013 entitled “Cheap has a high price: Responsibility problems relating to international private label products and food production in Thailand,” which he contributed to for Finnish rights watchdog Finnwatch.

Based on testimony taken in November 2012 from employees working in various departments of Natural Fruit Company Ltd.’s Pranburi plant in Prachuapkirikhan Province, the report states that Natural Fruit was committing serious labour and human rights violations against its workers, in particular against migrant and irregular workers, as well as other reportedly illegal activities.

Despite being approached by Finnwatch and Andy Hall on numerous occasions, the Natural Fruit Company Ltd. did not agree to meet with the researchers or clarify the research findings.

BWI and UNI Apro believe this legal action to be an attempt to silence yet another human rights defender in Thailand who, peacefully and legitimately, exercised the right to freedom of opinion and expression in order to defend and promote migrant rights.

BWI and UNI demand:

(1) Natural Fruit Company Limited should immediately drop malicious and aggressive civil and criminal law suits against Mr Hall.

(2) The Thai government should ensure an urgent 3rd party audit takes place at Natural Fruit premises and premises of the other factories under the Natground umbrella.

ALERT!!!!!! Thailand: Criminal lawsuit lodged against human rights defender Mr Andy Hall

1st April court hearing southern criminal court

Southern Criminal Court, Charoen Krung Rd, TIME  130pm

PLEASE COME AND SHOW YOUR SUPPORT !! THANK YOU SO MUCH

Prachuap Khiri Khan pineapple canning company filed criminal defamation charges against a British human rights advocate over treatment of migrant workers by the company.

Natural Fruit Co Ltd, which has headquarters in Pran Buri, claimed that Andy Hall, a British citizen, had damaged its reputation with libellous statements about its relations with migrant workers, according to papers at the website of the Southern Bangkok Criminal Court’s website and NGO sources.

Mr Hall, 32, well-known in Thaland although he was reportedly in Myanmar on Tuesday, faces charges under the Computer Crimes Act that carry penalties of up to five years in prison on each count.

In addition, the company filed a civil suit at the Nakhon Pathom Court claiming 300 million baht in civil damages caused by Mr Hall’s discussion of Natural Fruit and the migrant workers.

It is the second time Natural Fruit has instituted legal action against the British advocate. A previous suit cited interviews and allegedly libellous remarks Mr Hall made Jan 15-21 in Bangkok, including at a panel discussion at  the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand (FCCT).

The suits alleged that at least three media outlets posted reports of interviews with Mr Hall. The lawsuits also cited, but did not charge, the human rights group FinnWatch, which has researched the issue of migrant workers at Natural Fruit.

According to the lawsuits seen at the court’s website, Natural Fruit claimed it “was damaged by (Mr Hall’s) accusation that it violated human rights and labour rights by hiring workers under 15 years” of age, paid them wages below the minimum wage, and provided no holidays or bonus, all illegal acts.

The company also denied reports it had illegally confiscated passports of workers.

“These reports and information have caused damage to the company, brought insults and hatred from the public, both inside the country and internationally,” the suits alleged.

The court scheduled the first preliminary hearing on the defamation charges for April 1.

NGO circles on Tuesday were buzzing with concern over the possible long prison sentences and high compensation demanded by Natural Fruit.
