#myanmar #Bail #refused for #protesters at #Chinese #embassy #letpadaung

Activists who led a protest in front of the Chinese embassy in Yangon on December 29 against the death of local resident Khin Win during the protest at the Letpadaungtaung copper mine in Sagaing Region were refused bail after appearing in Dagon Township Court for the second time on December 20.
Nay Myo Zin, Naw Ohn Hla, Sein Htwe, Tin Htut Paing, Lay Lay, Than Swe and Mya Nu were arrested on December 30 and charged under six sections of the Penal Code of Myanmar.
Lawyers representing the activists said that the court should rethink the lawsuit as the detention of activists without the court’s arrest warrants amounts to violating human rights.
The state prosecutors objected to it as the accused would have no rights to get bail under section 505 (b).
“The authority has filed a lawsuit against them with section 505 (b) as they don’t want to grant bail. The police needs to seek arrest warrants from the court to arrest them in accordance with section 505 (b). But now they are being charged under different sections,” said lawyer Robert San Aung.
“We will start a strike in the jail if the authorities refuse to grant bail. We will rebel against the current rule of law. We strongly believe that the government is trying to use the dishonest ways to kill us in jail in place of peaceful methods,” said Nay Myo Zin.
The government usually takes a tough line on Letpadaungtaung protests staged at the Chinese embassy.
On December 10, 2013, Naw Ohn Hla, Tin Htut Paing, Aung Soe and Sithu were prosecuted for setting fire to the Chinese flag. eleven media

Burma Myanmar: Ambassador Li Junhua’s Press Conference Yangoon on (2012-12-08)

Ambassador Li Junhua from the Chinese Embassy in Myanmar held a press conference on the progress of the Lapaduang Project with internal and external media this past Friday. Held between the hours of 9:30 A.M. and 11:30A.M., the December 7th conference was conducted at the Chinese Embassy in Yangon.

Anxieties surrounding the project were addressed, as Ambassador Li Junhua assured the press that concerns pertaining to the Lapadaung project would be investigated by a commission led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. He declared, the project would continue only if the investigation’s results were accurate and attested to the viability of the project.

The construction of the copper mine in the Lapadaung Mountains of Myanmar’s upper regions, is  a joint venture between China’s Wan Bao Company and military-owned Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Ltd (UMEHL). Profits from the mining project will be distributed in accordance with the acquired product revenue.  The government of Myanmar is expected to gain the largest share of the profit and will benefit from 16.8 percent of the total proceeds. The U Paing Company and Wanbao Company will also be beneficiaries of the project, respectively claiming 13.8 and 13.3 percent of total profits. As remarked by Ambassador Li Junhua during the December 7th press conference, the only current investor for the project is the Chinese owned and operated Wanbao Company.

Protest against Chinese Intervention in our Internal Affairs

 

        Today, Kachin language is not recognized as an official language in Kachinland.  Our children are forbidden to learn our own language, our culture, or our heritage in our own State’s institutions.  Myitkyina University’s west lawn is littered with discarded illicit drug bottles and bathroom walls are adorned with syringe bins.  Our graduates are yearly denied from entering government’s workforce.  Our churches have no official permission to congregate.  Our lands are forcibly confiscated and transferred to the government cronies.  The current scale of destruction surpasses the misery we endured during the Japanese colonial era.  In WWII, Kachin Rangers collaborated with Gen. Chiang Kai-shek’s army to expel Fascist out of China and Burma.  Unfortunately, fascism still remains in Burma and this “Destructive Element” continues to terrorize its own 62 million citizens and searches for political resolution through the barrel of a gun since 1962.

        Six score and four years ago, Gen. Aung San lobbied Kachin national leaders along with leaders from other national races to petition for Independence in Unison.  He promised our ethnic leaders with creation of a genuine Federal Union and equal political rights for all.  Pang Long agreement was signed by four national races in 1947; hence the name the Union of Burma was coined for the new republic.

        In 2010, newly self appointed government was propped up to further marginalize and oppress the minorities.  We, Kachins, Shans, Karen, Chins, are becoming second class citizens in our land.  And, current Chinese government’s support of this authoritarian government only allows them to suppress its own people in perpetuity.  Therefore, we call upon Chinese, Burmese, and international community to UNITE and PROTEST against this tyrannical regime in any PEACEFUL means.

        We demand China to:

1)      Stop supporting the fascist government in Burma

2)      Halt investment in Burma until the return of transparent and accountable government

3)      Engage with the ethnic opposition group

4)      Open the border gates and help its western neighbors
