bomb went off in front of government-owned guest house

11 July 2011: A bomb went off in front of government-owned guest house near the Department of Construction in Thantlang Town around 10:30pm last night, with no injuries and destruction reported.

A resident from School Ward of Thantlang Town, about 20 miles away from Hakha, said that there was a gun shot just before the bomb blast.

“We are scared to learn that a bomb exploded last night but no one was hurt. And no houses were destroyed,” one of the Thantlang locals told Chinland Guardian.

As of the evening today, it is not yet known as to how the bomb blew off and who was responsible for the incident.

One source suggested that the local authorities denied any connection to the explosion.

“It is hard to say who did this but people seem to have a feeling that this is a threat by the military authorities to the local,” said one of the local leaders, who asks not to be named.

NLD’s Contributions to Victims of Chin Food Crisis Welcomed Amid Blockade by Authorities

25 January 2011: An ‘altruistic’ contribution made by Aung San Suu Kyi-led NLD (National League for Democracy) towards helping victims of Chin food crisis in Burma’s Chin State has been welcomed despite distribution hindrances imposed by the local authorities.

A total of 750 rice bags bought from Magwe Division of Central Burma were said to have arrived in Kanpetlet Town of southern Chin State, and another 500 would be on the way in a week time, according to the BBC Burmese news.

It is reported that aids distributions to mautam-affected victims have gradually started in the area although it was delayed until yesterday after the local authorities insisted permission be obtained from relevant governmental department.

“We are thankful to NLD for taking this action, which the government has just been not only ignoring the situation but also hampering the flows of aids assistance since the start of food crisis in Chin State. I believe this will also prompt other NGOs and communities to help our people who are suffering so much already,” one of Kanpetlet Community Leaders in Malaysia told Chinland Guardian. University Students Protest Against Rising Bus Fares in Kalay

12 January 2011: About 500 university students take to the street in Kalay Myo of Sagaing Division today, protesting against a sharp rise in bus fare introduced in the new year by the military authorities.

The students of three universities including Kalay University, Kalay Computer University and Tehnological University (Kalay) walk on foot from Kalay Train Station towards downtown around 7:30am, demonstrating against an increase of bus fares from 100 to 200 Kyats.

“They [the students] have been walking on foot towards their universities since early morning. They are protesting against the bus fares being increased from 100 to 200 Kyats for a single journey to the university,” a local resident of Kalay Myo told Chinland Guardian.

“The students have faced difficulties in waiting for and getting on the buses as the service is so limited. So, they are demanding more bus services from the authorities,” said a local witness.

In 2007, a sharp increase in fuel price led to popular protests later known as “Saffron Revolution” led by Buddhist monks, which was brutally put off by the military regime.

There are about 4,000 students studying at Kalay University, 1,000 at Government Tehnological University and 400 at Computer University in Kalay Myo.

Authorities Responded Positively to Student Protests In Kalay Myo

12 January 2011: The military authorities in Kalay Myo made positive responses to the street protest by the unitersity students today, promising that their demands would be met immediately.

The responses included putting the bus fare back to 100 Kyats from recently raised 200 Kyats, increasing the number of buses to upgrade the services, and setting up properly marked bus stops along the university bus routes.

And the buses running towards Kalay Computer University that used to pick up other passengers including local traders selling goods such as charcoals, and firewoods will be running only for students.

“The students as well as their parents are happy with the responses and they stopped protesting around 11am,” a local resident told Chinland Guardian.

It is claimed that the students were picked up from their protests with a total of nine buses back to their respective universities.

Early morning today, more than 1,000 students from three universities including Kalay University, Kalay Computer University and Tehnological University (Kalay) walked on the street in protest against a sharp increase in bus fares.

Armed Fighting Erupts in Southern Chin State

05 January 2011: The Burmese Army stationed in Paletwa Township, Chin State, and the Arakan Liberation Army (ALA) fought at Lapahwa Camp on 3 January 2011, ending up with four Burmese and one Arakanese soldiers dead.

Joint-Secretary 2 of the Arakan Liberation Party (ALP), Khaing Thu Ka, was quoted by the Narinjara news as saying that Lapahwa Camp of Burma Army Light Infantry Battalion No. 55 was attacked during the day and all the movements could be seen clearly.

The Arakan Liberation Army is set to carry out an increasing attack against the Burmese army on the western border in the new year, according to Khaing Thu Kha.

It is said that the Burmese army strengthened, after the attack, its military force along the border to conduct offensive operations against ALA soldiers.

“We can expect an increase in the use of forced porters and other type of human rights violations against villagers with the increase of Burmese troops,” said Field Director of Chin Human Rights Organisation, Pu Terah Thantluang. According to CHRO, the Burma Army has trippled its presence in some parts of Chin State since November last year.

There are at least 20 Burma Army camps in Paletwa Township.

The Arakan Liberation Army, ALP’s armed wing, was formed on the Thai border in 1973. It is one of the biggest ethnic revolutionary armies on the western Burmese border.

Malaysia’s RELA Raids Refugee Neighborhood, Arrests Dozens

RELA broke this door and forced -enter the house

01 December 2010: Over 100 ‘illegal’ migrants, including about 30 Chins were arrested in one of the biggest raids yet on a refugee neighborhood by Malaysia’s RELA since the beginning of the year.

At around 1:00 a.m. last night, an army of RELA personnel rounded up the Jalan Imbi neighborhood of Kuala Lumpur, breaking locked doors and forced-entering people’s houses.

“We were having a Sweet December gathering when we heard that RELA was rounding up the entire neighborhood,” said a 17 year-old UNHCR-recognized Chin refugee girl who said she was initially taken away before being released about an hour later.

All but one in her house was later released after the RELA found them to have possessed UNHCR cards.

“We immediately turned off the lights and stayed quietly in the rooms. But they broke the backdoor open and forced their way inside the house anyway,” she explained. She said that there were over 20 people gathering in the house for a mid-night Sweet December celebration when the RELA stormed in. The Chin National Front (CNF) will be a part of the six major ethnic armies

8 November 2010: The Chin National Front (CNF) will be a part of the six major ethnic armies, which decided last week to form an alliance following a secret meeting near the Thai-Burma border. The alliance will take on the Burmese Army in the event of an attack by it.

The Chin National Front (CNF) will be a part of the six major ethnic armies, which decided last week to form an alliance following a secret meeting near the Thai-Burma border. The alliance is called the Committee for the Restoration of the Federal Union.

“Each of us has our own duty. We have only one ethnic armed group in our state,” said a source in Hakha town.

The alliance was formed on November 4 by the six major ethnic armies – the Kachin Independent Organization (KIO), Shan State Army North (SSAN), New Mon State Party (NMSP), Karen National Union (KNU), Chin National Front (CNF) and the Kareni Progressive Party (KNPP).

“Ethnic groups cannot be protected individually, so we set up a committee to help each other if the junta launches an offensive against us,” said a CNF leader.

The Chin National Front was established in 1988 after the uprising by students in Burma, where many were killed by the Burmese Army. Among the ethnic armed groups the CNF is one of the last to be formed.

“The 2010 election in Burma is not the best thing for us. Now armed groups will play a vital role for our nation. People support the activities of CNF,” said an elder in Tawngzang town.

A student of Kale-Collage said, “We, Chin youths, are very keen about the alliance and I think the CNF has a responsibility to enroll youths into the group.”
