Suu Kyi :National unity is achievable

TIDDIM—Myanmar may have yet to enjoy true national unity despite its independence, but the idea of national unity is not a dream but a reality that can be  achieved, according to opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

DASSK

Suu Kyi, leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD), was speaking at a ceremony to open a post-primary school at Zonwanzan village in Tiddim Township, Chin State, yesterday.

“Our country has various national races. Bamar is also one of them. But we (Bamar) are the majority. Some view all except Bamar as ethnic groups. Actually, we are all ethnic groups. We all must have unity to develop our country. We must have the spirit of unity,” said Suu Kyi.

“Over the past 20 or 30 years of our political activities, our National League for Democracy party has regarded all the ethnic parties as our loyal friends. When our party was suffering from hard times, it was the ethnic parties who stood by us. This is why national unity is the thing that can really be achieved. My belief is that it is not a dream.”

For example, she said, her own father (Myanmar’s independence hero General Aung San) said he was able to achieve independence only after forging national unity with the ethnic groups.

“Since my father’s death, I trust in our national races, which have been loyal to us. So we must establish a union with loving kindness and truthfulness. We must establish a democratic union. We already have independence, but we have not been able to establish a genuine democratic country. We have not achieved national unity yet. We must try to achieve it,” said Suu Kyi, who is also a Lower House MP.

Suu Kyi, adding that the majority Bamar people should not bully the ethnic minorities, called for coordination and understanding among them. She also stressed the need for individuals to develop a sense of responsibility and urged schoolteachers to cultivate that spirit among their young students.

The NLD leader has been touring Chin State since Monday. This is her first visit there since 2003.

Chin leaders say they will compile an “actual” list of Chin ethnic groups living in their respective state.

Chin leaders say they will compile an “actual” list of Chin ethnic groups living in their respective state.

Myanmar government officially recognized 135 distinct ethnic groups that are grouped into eight “major national ethnic races” such as Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, Chin, Mon, Bamar, Rakhine and Shan.

Chin political leaders say the Chin national ethnic race doesn’t actually include 53 ethnic groups as it’s officially acknowledged by the government.

“Some can’t even be accepted as ethnic groups as they hardly exist. We will compile an actual list to submit to the government,” said Nge Pee, the secretary for Chin National Party.

The compilation process is expected to begin late in this year. And all political groups in the state will soon hold a conference which may produce a paper related to the issue.

“We will try to reach agreement by all. The processes will began only after we are all in agreement,” he added.

Zomi Democratic Party, an officially registered political party from Chin had faced problems at first while registering as it’s not included in the national recognized list.

“Chin State has no Chin people who say “I am a Chin!” within the state. For example, we say we’re Zomis. They’ll say they’re Laimis in Hakha and Falam, and Khumis in Mindat and Matupi,” said Pugin Kamlian, the general secretary for Zomi Democratic Party.

Thousands of Chins are scattered across the country, some 500,000 Chins living in their state and other 600,000 Chins living in the lowlands of Myanmar.

Electoral Violence and Intimidation in Tedim Township, Chin State

[Chiang Mai, Thailand]  The Chin Human Rights Organization has received several reports of electoral violence and intimidation in Tedim Township, northern Chin State.

This afternoon, in Buan village, close to Tedim town, Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) agents in campaign uniforms stood at the gate of the polling station, checking peoples voter registration documents.  They asked villagers waiting to cast their votes if they intended to vote for the USDP.  Those who said yes were allowed into the polling station, but those who said no were turned away by the USDP party agents.

Villagers who were refused entry to the polling station reported the incident to agents from the Chin National Party and Chin Progressive Party.  The agents went to the polling station to complain, and a fight broke out. Army forces people to search for forest turmeric

News – Khonumthung News
WEDNESDAY, 20 JANUARY 2010 15:46

20 January 2010: Colonel Thwe Lin from the military camp in Paletwa Township, Chin state, of the Shin Let Wa based LIB 234, has ordered the local people to search the forest for turmeric from the first week of January.

“Local people have to procure at least 125 kilograms of turmeric by the end of January 2010 on the orders of Colonel Thwe Lin,” said a villager of Paite village, Paletwa Township.

The market price of turmeric for a kilogram is Kyat 20,000 but the military will purchase it for Kyat 9000 from the people.

“We heard that the army will purchase at Kyat 9000 a kilogram but we don’t believe it. They will confiscate all of it on some excuse. We want to purchase it, if it is available at Kyat 9000 per kilogram,” said a chairman of the Block Peace and Development Council.

“The forest turmeric can kill fish when dipped in water. It has medicinal value,” he added.

The local people are busy searching for turmeric afraid to flout the order of the military though they have lots of work in their fields.

“This is the season to tend our cultivated lands for new crops, but we have to do the army’s bidding first,” said a local in Shin Let Wa village.
Forest turmeric from Paletwa townships are purchased by traders from China and Japan.

SPDC INTO ELECTION CAMPAIGN IN CHIN STATE

News – Khonumthung News
MONDAY, 30 NOVEMBER 2009 14:50

Campaigning for the 2010 general elections in Burma seems to have begun in earnest from the military junta’s side with the Deputy Minister of Power and Electricity visiting Tidim town and Tawnzang town in Chin state on November 13 to 15 on a campaign tour.

When the minister arrived he met departmental staff members, representatives of the Union Solidarity Development Association, Women’s Association and about 100 parents in a high school hall in Tawnzang town. He addressed them regarding the election.

“He urged us to cast votes for the candidates of the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) and beware of enemies of the state. The elections will be held soon and we have to unite as a family,” said a member of the USDA.

When Khonumthung News asked a person, who attended the meeting about the polls, he said that the forthcoming general election cannot be free and fair. “Even if we cast votes against the authorities it will convert it to votes in its favour,” he added.

Similarly, the second commander of LIB 309 Myat Soe had campaigned in Kalemyo and Tamu Township on November 7, where he met representatives of the Union Solidarity Development Association, Women’s Association, volunteer firemen and local parents.

Although the military junta has officially announced the elections for 2010, there is no declaration of codes and conducts of the election and the date.
