Three children who escaped from traffickers detained in Phang Nga jail

15.february 2011

Ma Ei Ei, the Child Protection Coordinator of Foundation for Education and Development (FED) based in Phang Nga Province said that three Burmese children were detained in Immigration jail, Phang Nga, Southern Thailand after being trafficked from Myawaddy city, Burma.

The children are Yu Nit, 18 years old from Myawady, Myint Aung 16 from Yangon and Zaw Khat also 16 from Taung Ngu. They escaped from the traffickers and asked a person on the street how to go to the nearest Police station or Immigration Office. An Immigration Officer arrived and took the children to the Immigration Jail.

Ma Ei Ei, of FED who assisted the three young people also said, “I think that although this was their first time in Thailand they acted intelligently. They were placed to work on a rubber plantation as soon as they arrived. They heard from others there that there were many police officers and that it would not be easy to get through check points. As soon as they learned that they were supposed to work on fishing boats they ran away. We apologized to the Immigration Officers and asked them to send the children to Mae Sot instead of Ranong because the children would have difficulties in Ranong as they had no acquaintances in that area.”

I contacted all the organizations for which I had phone numbers.” Said Myint Aung. Yu Nit said, “We left our country to work. We were lucky not to be sold to work on fishing boats. There are many brokers in Myawady. We were told we would work on a prawn farm. I want to tell others not to believe the Myawady brokers’ words and not to come to Thailand to work. Now, I am going to go home to my mom.”

Ko Than Zin who was arrested and put in Phang Nga jail because of illegal taking children from one province to another informed FED about the three children’s condition.

He said, “I have been sold in the past. If those children had been sold to work on fishing boats they would disappeared. It would have been impossible to establish contact with them and they would never have been freed.  I contacted all the organizations for which I had phone numbers and asked them for help.

We were running the whole night on foot and were arrested and taken to jail about 10 a.m. said Myint Aung. Yu Nit said, “We came here for work. We were lucky not to be sold to work on fishing boats. There are many brokers in Myawady.  We were told we would work on a prawn farm. I want to tell others not to believe what the brokers in Myawady say and not to come to Thailand to work.  Now, I am going to go home to my mom.”

The children also said that they had to walk the entire distance from Myawady while carrying bags of rice, the ration for 4 days. They walked for several days having been sold from one broker to another broker. When they were in the hands of a Thai broker, they were not given any food. That Thai broker took six (6) people in a very small, over crowded car. According to the children, they were sent by Nga Chit and Nga Tun who were each about 30 years old and from Myawady.
