The army and police in Chiang Rai convened on Saturday to review Myanmar’s complaint that some Myanmar border merchants were detained by Thai officers and experienced money confiscation when executing financial transactions in Thailand.
Police officers in Mae Sai, a border district of the northern province, said all transactions are now treated as proceeds from drug trafficking. All money would be returned after the owners are cleared.
They said that to prevent such misunderstanding, Myanmar will be advised to notify in advance Thai immigration officers, customs officers and police officers of transactions involving a large sum of cash.
The Thai authorities said that such meeting is to neutralise conflicts, which may damage the bilateral relations.
