Police investigatePolice investigate Facebook child abuse
Investigators raided a house belonging to a military MP on Thursday in response to a viral Facebook post alleging child abuse.
Bahan Township police and Child Protection Service officers twice visited the uptown estate in Sayasan Ward on University Lane, Bahan Township, Yangon.
The Facebook post showed photos of a child in her underwear about to get tied up with a rope by a woman.
Yin Yin Nwal, wife of the military representative, reported that the eight-year-old child was hired help around the house and her young daughters’ friend.
She said that the woman in the picture was the victim’s aunt, Than Than New, adding that the pair had had left Yangon for Taungoo half an hour after the police arrived in the morning. Yin Yin Nwal apparently said: “If the police are involved in her disciplining her niece, matters will only get messy.”
Yin Yin Nwal claimed that she did not know the Taungoo address.
“The child stole food and drank from bottles off limits to her. She also did not wash her hands so her aunt beat her in many different ways. I asked her to not go overboard and asked her to punish her by doing squats instead. The child was afraid so she begged her aunt not to beat her but tie her up so the aunt agreed. The clothes were dirty and, according to the aunt, the child could not wash the clothes before mopping the house so she asked the child to take off her clothes,” said Yin Yin Nwal.
The military MP, owner of the estate, also said that the little girl ran away, locked herself in the bathroom and then proceeded to hide in the compound, because she was afraid of being beaten.
A neighbour said that he took the photos and contacted Bahan police, although he denied uploading them to Facebook.
He said: “They have been torturing the poor girl for around 20 days. Their methods are cruel. They should give her appropriate jobs for her age. There are injuries all over her body and she might be traumatised as she is still so young.”
