Girl, 8, raped and starved to death
An eight-year-old girl allegedly raped by a soldier has died at Yangon General Hospital on October 21 of malnutrition.

She was treated at the Yankin Children’s Hospital in Yangon from October 8. Her remains will be buried in Yangon, according to Sittwe elder Than Htun.

She was from Danyawati ward in Sittwe, Rakhine State. Her mother died of leukaemia and the child had since shown signs of mental illness and suffered from malnutrition. She told her neighbours that she was raped on September 22 by a solider who stayed at her house temporarily.

A DNA test is been carried out to support the accusation.

The accused rapist Sergeant Nay Win Aung from Regiment 354 was charged in Sittwe on September 23 but was taken by military personnel to be tried in a military court. It was reported that Nay Win Aung was charged with drinking, absence without leave and defaming the military, according to the Sittwe-based coordination committee of Rakhine social organisations.

If he is found guilty, he will be expelled from the military and transferred to a civilian court and tried again.

သူမအား ေအာက္တိုဘာလ ၂၂ ရက္ေန႕ မနက္ ၁၀ နာရီခန္႕ တြင္ ေရေ၀းသုႆန္၌ မီးသျဂိဳလ္မည္ ျဖစ္ေၾကာင္း သိရသည္။
အဓမၼျပဳက်င့္သူဟု စြပ္စြဲခံထားရသူ စစ္သားအား အခုအခါ တပ္မေတာ္မွ ထိန္းသိမ္းထားျပီး မူးယစ္ေသာက္စားမႈ၊ တာ၀န္ပ်က္ကြက္မႈ၊ တပ္မေတာ္အား ဂုဏ္သိကၡာ ညွိးႏြမ္းေစမူတို႕ျဖင့္ တရားစြဲဆိုထားသည္ဟု သိရသည္။ ယင္းအမႈမ်ားကို စီရင္ခ်က္ခ်ျပီးေနာက္ပိုင္းမွ အရပ္ဘက္ တရားရံုးသို႕ လြဲေျပာင္းကာ အဓမၼမႈႏွင့္ ဆက္လက္ တရားစြဲ သြားမည္ဟု သိရသည္။

Four people were injured in a bomb blast in Monghsu, Shan State, at 4pm on Wednesday. The blast occurred near the Shan Literature and Culture Office in the town centre. The injured are being treated at Monghsu hospital.

Sai Tun Aye, Monghsu candidate from the Shan Nationalities League for Democracy, said: “The bomb contained ball bearings. A 78-year-old woman was sent to the emergency department in shock.”

Resident Nan Hsai Hein said: “A 12-year-old girl has neck and cheek injuries. Two novice monks sustained injuries to all parts of their bodies. A woman received wounds to her back and abdomen.”

San Lwin, Shan deputy police colonel, said: “The blast is assumed to have a connection with the Shan State Army [SSA] in Wan Hai. The army is inspecting the bomb. Police investigations will continue.”

Another SNLD candidate Nan Kaw Kham said: “The bomb was presumably the work of professionals as it contained ball bearings. A young girl has severe injuries and is in critical condition. Two novices suffered wounds to their hands, legs and heads.”

Monghsu Township is the scene of fighting between government forces and the SSA, also known as the Shan State Progress Party (SSPP), which did not sign the recent nationwide ceasefire agreement.

Myanmar steps up border security ahead of elections
Myanmar has stepped up border security along the Myanmar-Bangladesh border in an attempt to prevent possible violence during the election period, according to Maungdaw District police force.

A joint team comprising police and army personnel has begun conducting inspections and patrols in Maungdaw, Rakhine State.

“The November 8 election is drawing near. We are carrying out round-the-clock inspections and patrolling wards in Maungdaw, which shares a border with Bangladesh, in order to expose destructive acts, illegal arms possession and the narcotic drug trade. We are under the close supervision of the head of the district police force, and we are cooperating with the army,” said a police officer from Maungdaw.

Radio Free Asia (RFA) quoted an unnamed military officer as saying the army will deploy 12 battalions in Rakhine and Chin states, which border Bangladesh, during the upcoming elections.

On October 18, fights between an unnamed armed group and the Bangladesh army occurred near the Chittagong region, causing casualties. The Bangladesh army has sent troops to the Myanmar border, a Bangladeshi newspapers reported.
