Machete-wielding assailants barged into the Suddhaswar publisher’s Lalmatia office and hacked Ahmedur Rashid Chowdhury Tutul and two other writers. Another publisher, Faisal Arefin Dipan of ‘Jagriti Prokashony’, was found hacked to death at Shahbagh hours later. Both publishers published works of slain writer-blogger Avijit Roy, who was killed in a similar attack in February. Since then, three other secular bloggers have been killed. The tweet described the publishers as “apostates”, who frequently published books that “violated the honour of Prophet Muhammad”. It said the attacks were “vengeance in honour of the messenger of Allah and the religion of Islam”. Police’s Deputy Commissioner Muntasirul Islam told bdnews24.com that they were investigating the claim. “Our teams are working to ascertain credibility of the claim,” he said. “We are investigating who tweeted and from where.” Name of the militant group was previously used to claim credits for the killing of Roy and another secular writer Niladri Chatterjee Niloy in August. ——- A publisher of slain writer-blogger Avijit Roy has been hacked to death hours after another publisher of his books was attacked in Dhaka. Faisal Arefin Dipan, who ran ‘Jagriti Prokashony’, was hacked to death in his office on the second floor of Aziz Supermarket at Shahbagh on Saturday, blogger and online activist Mahmudul Haque Munshi told bdnews24.com. Dipan was attacked hours after another publisher Ahmedur Rashid Tutul was attacked with sharp weapons. He was declared dead by doctors after being taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), police said. Tutul is being treated at DMCH along with writer Ranadipam Basu and blogger Tarek Rahim, who were also injured in the attack. Tutul, who owns publishing house ‘Shuddhaswar’, was hacked up in his office at Lalmatia around 2:30pm along with blogger Rahim and writer Basu. Doctors said Tutul and Rahim were in critical condition. Later, DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia, quoting doctors, said all the three were out of danger. ‘Shuddhaswar’ had published a number of books written by Avijit Roy. Faisal Arefin Dipan was the only son of well-known writer and professor of Dhaka University’s Bengali department Abul Kashem Fazlul Haque. Attacked NLD candidate in stable condition
The CT scan results of Naing Ngan Lin, the National League for Democracy’s candidate who was attacked by a sword last night on his campaign in Thaketa Township, showed that his condition is now stable.
“Scan results are good; there are no blood leaking or congealed blood clots in his head. He can talk, sit and eat,” said Dr Tin Myo Win, the chair of the NLD’s health network this afternoon at 1:30 pm.
Naing Ngan Lin had his wounds on head and hands operated this morning but still under other necessary medical examinations.
May Win Myint, the NLD lower house member from Mayangon Constituency, came and met Naing Ngan Lin.

update : Operation performed on injured NLD candidate Naing Ngan Lin A surgical operation was performed on Naing Ngan Lin, the National League for Democracy’s (NLD) candidate for the Yangon regional parliament, this morning at 2 am after being attacked by a sword last night. The three-hour long operation was to sew the wounds on his head and hands closed, according to his wife Khin Sandar Win. Another injured NLD member, Kyaw Thu, also had his hand treated. “The blood vessels in his hands were sewed up. The head is operated. The doctors didn’t mention the number of stitches. Other important matters were also taken care of. He can talk,” said Khin Sandar Win. The next surgery will be performed on November 2 and Naing Ngan Lin is in the intensive care unit of the Yangon General Hospital, his wife said. Naing Ngan Lin and another NLD member Ko Ni and Thanda Maw, campaign manager of Thet Htar Nwe were attacked with a sword wielding man at 8th Street of Mannpyay ward, Thakayta township, at about 9.30 pm yesterday. One NLD member, Aung Kyaw, said while they were going round on a decorated float, an unknown man appeared suddenly and punched those who came along with the vehicle. After some NLD members’ intervention, the man went home and came back with a sword. Then he started to attack and but he was stopped by Naing Ngan Lin and some party members. Later, three other empty-handed men joined him and started their attacks, said Aung Kyaw. Three of the attackers are under interrogation at Thaketa Township Police Station under sections 609/2015, 326/294/114. They are Zaw Latt (a.k.a) Aung Zaw Latt, Tin Aung Khaing Oo and Myo Min Khaing. Breaking news: Some NLD party members including Naing Ngan Lin from Thaketa Township have been attacked in the township tonight. A man attacked the NLD party members with a knife while NLD is parading with a decorated vehicle in the ward, said Dr. Wai Phyo Aung, a lower house candidate for NLD. A team of pro-bono lawyers working under the Lawyers Council of Thailand (LCT) to defend two Myanmar migrant workers accused of the rape and murder of a female British tourist and the murder of a British male tourist on Koh Tao Island, Thailand in September 2014 today submitted a 56 page closing statement as an opinion for Koh Samui Court to consider in issuing a judgement in the case. The written statement is the final part of a one year effort by a core team of 7 Thai lawyers supported by Burmese, Australian and British translators, assistants and advisors to ensure a fair trial and adequate defense for the accused. Case witness testimony that ended on 11th October 2015 after 21 days of witness hearings involving 34 witnesses and thousands of pages of evidence has already been widely publicised by the media. Koh Samui Court has appointed both parties to the case on 24th December 2015 to hear a verdict.

Hannah Witheridge (23) and David Miller (24) were murdered on 15th September 2014 on Koh Tao, a tourist island in the Gulf of Thailand. The murder investigation was widely criticised both domestically and internationally due to alleged mishandling of forensic evidence and alleged torture both of the two accused and migrant workers living on Koh Tao Island. The challenges faced to Thailand’s law enforcement and justice systems in this case also cast a serious shadow over the safety of tourism in Thailand.

On 2nd October 2014, Zaw Lin and Wai Phyo (Win Zaw Htun), 22 year old migrant workers from Rakhine state in Myanmar, were arrested for immigration offences. Additional charges were then laid against them during questioning for rape, murder and theft related to the killings of Hannah Witheridge and David Miller. The two accused signed confessions during interrogation and also publicly and during questioning re-enacted the crimes.

On 14th October, at a first advance witness hearing in the case, both accused then retracted their confessions to LCT lawyers. Later on defense lawyers received information that the two accused alleged beatings and torture were used during their detention, prior to sending on for questioning by investigation officials, to elicit their confessions made involuntarily. The Migrant Worker Rights Network (MWRN) and rights groups called on the LCT to provide trained lawyers for the accused to ensure they could adequately defend themselves against all the charges so as to ensure a fair trial and also importantly to guard against a potential miscarriage of justice in such a highly publicised and tragic case.

A two month delay in prosecuting the accused resulted from extensive media and diplomatic attention towards the case in addition to calls for justice by the accused, their families and the wider public. This resulted in further questioning of the accused that confirmed that both maintained their complete innocence and insisted their confessions came about involuntary as a result of torture. Multiple criminal charges were then filed against Zaw Lin and Wai Phyo on 4th December 2014 by the Koh Samui prosecutor at Koh Samui Court. The judges heeded calls for adequate time to prepare a thorough defense for the accused and, after a number of preliminary evidence exchange hearings, a 21-day trial eventually commenced on 8th July 2015.
