Police launched a crackdown on about 200 students and activists, including a well-known women’s rights defender, NILAR THEIN , who were staging a protest in downtown Rangoon on Thursday afternoon. Students and activists have been arrested during a violent crackdown against a protest near the Yangon City Hall.An official from Kyauktadar Township of Yangon announced a warning over the loudspeaker at around 3:30pm in front of Mahabanduhla Park in the city, against the protest even before it took place. At around 4pm, about 50 students and more than 60 supporters gathered in front of the city hall, demanding authorities not to use force on the main boycott student column and showing their support for the main column being blocked in Letpadan from marching into Yangon. More than 300 men wearing civilian clothes with red armbands saying “Duty” and over 500 police started surrounding the protestors. The protestors were sent scattering after they were set upon firstly by men wearing civilian clothes with red armbands who attacked the group with batons and later by uniformed police officers, according to witnesses and campaigners. “Men wearing civilian clothes with red armbands started attacking the protestors. They looked very rude. Before the attack, reporters asked them who are they and what their duties here are. They replied rudely to the reporters that those are none of you business. They even attacked girls. A girl was forcedly taken,” said a witness. “I was very frightened to see the beating. It’s as if it’s a backsliding effort of the government,” said a female witness. Police arrested three ’88 Generation members and five students. “Students arrested are Zin Min Phyo, Hein Htet Aung and Zaw Linn Htut. Nilar Thein, Nu NU Aung and Myo Thant from the 88 Generation as well as two others are also arrested
