YANGON – Although investigations of two young female volunteer teachers from the Kachin Baptist ConventionYANGON – Although investigations of two young female volunteer teachers from the Kachin Baptist Convention (KBC) who were brutally raped and killed in Kaungkhar village in northern Shan State on January 19 are ongoing, the post-mortem results gathered on January 20 cannot be issued at once, said Zaw Yar, the KBC secretary for Momauk Zone.
“About 20 police officers, including the head of the Police Department for Muse District, went to Kaungkhar village again yesterday. We investigated not only all soldiers from No 503 Infantry Regiment under the North-East Command but also the Tactical Operations Commander and Column Commander deployed in the village, as well as the villagers. We urged them to seek the culprits. The investigation is not yet complete,” Zaw Yar told the Daily Eleven.
All soldiers from No 503 Infantry Regiment under the North-East Command are being investigated because the women were raped and murdered while the regiment was in the village.
“We want to know post-mortem results, but the authorities told us to wait one or two days. We were surprised,” said Zaw Yar.
Dr Tin Tun, the Medical Superintendent from Muse Hospital, could not be reached for a comment on the post-mortem results.
According to a high ranking officer from the North East Command, the post-mortem results were sent to the local police department.
“On January 20, the two dead bodies were sent to the Muse Hospital, and the post-mortem examinations were done there. We have learned that the results were sent to the police department on January 21. We have received very few of the investigation results,” said the high ranking officer from the North East Command.
“It is early to comment on the incident. We don’t know who committed the crime. However, if a military official committed the crime, we will take severe action against him. When the results come out, action will be taken against the perpetrators in accordance with the law,” he added.
The Police Department in Muse District, which is participating in the investigation, also could not be reached as of the night of January 21.
“The police force is now investigating. If the investigation has the defects, the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission (MNHRC) will participate in investigation,” said Sit Myaing, chairman of the MNHRC.
“We heard the story about the rape case. Currently, we are observing the case. If the police conduct the investigation in accordance with the law, it is a good plan. If they conduct a defective investigation, we will begin inquiring,” said Sit Myaing.
The the KBC is currently urging authorities to expose the culprits and to issue the results of the post-mortem examination as soon as possible.
