The opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) denied that Aung San Suu Kyi, the chairperson of the NLD will be appointed speaker of the parliament after the general election.
NLD spokesperson Win Myint told The Daily Eleven, the heading expressing “Aung San Suu Kyi will try only the parliamentary speaker position” was posted on the internet page of The Trade Times Journal on January 8.
“The report expressed that if the parliaments fails to amend the 2008 Constitution prior to the 2015 general election, Suu Kyi will likely be appointed as the influential speaker of the parliament in accordance with the provisions prescribed in the Constitution after the election as she is banned from being a president,’’ the NLD’s spokesperson said on January 2.
NLD’s spokesperson Win Myint denied talking to The Trade Times about the report. He asked who the NLD’s spokesperson who talked to the Trade Times. The name must be mentioned. Now is the time we are trying to make constitutional amendment. No decision has been made.
According to Win Myint, Monywa Aung Shin who is a member of the information committee of the NLD also denied talking about the report.
“We don’t know whether he is telling the truth,” Win Myint said.

“Regarding the news coverage of the Trade Times, the expression is wrong. The Trade Times made wrong interpretation. This matter is not a problem and we can deal with it. The Trade Times questioned me about the constitutional amendment after 2015 election. I replied that Suu Kyi had difficulty in becoming the president if the constitutional amendment is made after the election, that the Tatmadaw could not amend the Section 436 and 59 (f), that Suu Kyi would keep on trying to become president and she would try to win the 2015 general election,” Aung Shin said.
“While I was being interviewed, Ye Tun of White Tiger party was also present. The Trade Times interviewed Ye Tun as well. I think our two interviews caused the journal to misunderstand,” Aung Shin said.
“I am not the spokesperson nor close to Suu Kyi. I am a member of information committee of the NLD,” Aung Shin said.
