Two suspected militants were killed and a ranger was injured in a fierce gunfight in Jor I-rong district of Narathiwat province on Tuesday.
Police said the clash began at about 1 p.m. when five alleged militant in a pick-up truck refused to stop at a checkpoint on the Jor I-rong-Sungai Padi road for search.
The checkpoint was manned by rangers from the 48th Ranger Regiment.
Rangers in three motorcycles then chased after the pickup truck.
The truck stopped near a tambon hospital at Banpare Lubo village and the militants jumped out and opened fire at the rangers.
A fierce firefight broke out with two militant shot dead and the rest fled.
One ranger identified as Win Naku was slightly injured in his left hand.
The two killed militants were later identified as Sama-eh Palamubing, 39, and Mayuti Ete, 39.
Both are residents of Narathiwat’s Ra Ngae district and were wanted in many security-related cases.
Found in the pickup was a box containing assorted ammunition, backpacks and some cloth.
