Over a thousand people from the Letpadungtaung area gathered to attend the funeral of Khin Win, who was killed this week in clashes between residents and police. The attendants called for the destruction of the Letpadaungtaung mine at the funeral, sources say.
The funeral was held on December 25 at Moekyo Pyin village, Khin Win’s native village, where locals commemorated her by carving her name on her grave.
Locals said they admired her as a heroine.
After the funeral service, attendants protested at the place where Khin Win was killed, shouting slogans such as “Stop the copper mine project that killed Khin Win”, “Abolish the copper mine project that didn’t follow the report of the investigation commission” and “Return the farmland seized for the project.”
Khin Win was killed and many others were injured when police and local farmers clashed after the Myanmar Wanbao Mining Copper Co Ltd (MWMCL) tried to erect a fence around the project area on December 22. The following day, the company continued its efforts, and four more locals sustained bullet wounds.
On December 25, MWMCL suspended its attempts to fence off the site of the controversial Letpadaungtaung project. CR. ELEVEN MEDIA
