Army rangers seized a large cache of drugs after a brief clash with armed guards of a drug caravan in Mae Chan district of Chiang Rai on Thursday.
A hill tribe armed guard was arrested.
Col Kasidis Lakrod, deputy commander of the Pa Muang Field Force, said he ordered rangers from the 3108 Base to intercept a drug caravan after receiving intelligence report of an attempt to smuggle drugs into the country via the Mar Chan border.
The rangers under the command of Capt Anant Tamara encountered the armed drug caravan at Ban Pong Pakam village near the border.
A signal was sent out for the caravan to stop for search but was fired upon by then armed guards.
A brief gunfight broke out and lasted with the caravan fleeing across the border, leaving several backpacks behind, and a guard.
More tan 400,000 methamphetamines or crazy pills were seized.
The armed guard identified as Jahae Lahu, 36, a Muser tribe villager, admitted to be paid 40,000 baht each to protect the drug from Ban Huakam to Ban Mae Yao village inside the Thai border.
Drug suppression authorities said the caravan may try to smuggle over a million methamphetamines into the Thai border as it has more than 10 guards providing protection.thai pb
