All Burma Students’ Democratic Front (ABSDF)’s northern bureau on Friday commemorates 26th anniversary of 1988’s student-led uprising, also known as 8888 or 88th uprising, at its headquarters Janghtung Lahkum Bum located near Laiza.

Yebaw La Seng, commander of ABSDF’s northern bureau, said in a welcoming message that 88th uprising is a historic event that changed the course of Burma’s history. People of all backgrounds joined pro-democracy rallies throughout Burma during the uprising. “We still haven’t reached our goals, we need to keep working towards our goals”, added La Seng.

On behalf of Kachin Independence Organization (KIO), Col. Maran Zau Tawng said in a message that as ABSDF was born out of 88th uprising and from ordinary public, student warriors have fought bravely alongside ethnic armed groups in battles against Tatmadaw. He also said, “We should never forget 88th spirit to continue the struggles.”

In a statement read out by Yebaw Aung Swe Oo, ABSDF’s Chairman Than Ge said many lives have been lost over the years. “Their service and sacrifices will not be forgotten, the struggles will continue,” said Than Ge. Thousands of innocent civilians and students were killed by government soldiers during 88th uprising.

Arakan Army also sent a letter to ABSDF troops promising that it will continue to fight alongside ABSDF to achieve equal rights and a democratic federal union in Burma.

ABSDF was founded on Nov 1, 1988 by students who fled to border areas after the 88th uprising in Burma. Its objectives are to liberate the peoples of Burma from military dictatorship, to achieve democracy and human rights, to attain internal peace, and to build a federal union in Burma. CR. KNL NEWS
