BANGKOK, July 29 — On the occasion of the National Thai Language Day today, Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha, chief of the Army and the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), said in his speech marking the day that all Thai people should value and protect the Thai language which showed the identity and development of the nation.

Gen Prayuth looked to the historical precedent for the occasion, explaining that National Thai Language Day falls annually on July 29 because oif His Majesty the King. The celebration is marked because His Majesty the King attended an academic discussion on problems regarding the usage of Thai vocabulary at the Thai language club of the Faculty of Arts in Chulalongkorn University on July 29, 1962.

In that meeting 52 years ago His Majesty the King made many knowledgeable remarks on the necessity for Thai people to use Thai correctly and conserve it.

“On the occasion of the National Thai Language Day, I would like to remind people and the youth of the nation to always realize that Thailand is one of a small number of countries that have their own languages, completely both spoken and written ones, and its language has been a valuable heritage for longer than 700 years,” Gen Pyayuth said..

“Therefore, everyone should be proud of it and aware of the great contribution of ancestors for developing the characters and the Thai language that has existed until today. I encourage everyone to join forces to keep the Thai language as a cultural asset of Thailand,” Gen Prayuth said. (MCOT )
