TDRI: #Thailand #faced with #rising #corruption in past 4-5 yrs

10 March 2014 (NNT) – The Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) has indicated a constant rise in corruption in Thailand during the last 4-5 years, especially in politics, with the country’s ranking on the Corruption Perception Index last year falling to 102. During a seminar to look into Thailand’s corruption problem, TDRI Director Deunden Nikomborirak indicated that although the kingdom had adopted the democratic system for over 80 years, corruption activities had been found to be increasing continuously. She said such finding was in contrast to the information in most other democratic countries, where corruption was on the decline. Ms Deunden stated that the problem was at a critical point in the political sector. She, however, said it was a good sign that people were calling for reformation and wishing for better politicians. The director added that despite the existence of a number of independent organizations which set out to eliminate corruption, the multiplying corruption cases signified that they had not been successful in their goal. According to reports, Thailand scored only 35 points out of 100 on the Corruption Perception Index in 2013 and was placed at number 102 out of 177 countries surveyed, a significant drop from number 88 in 2012. The TDRI disclosed that the country’s ranking had been sliding since 2010.

Two special warfare soldiers from Lopburi were arrested by Lumphini station police after they drove past a security checkpoint last night.

The two were identified as Sergeant  Pisanu Fuengrung, 25, and  Lance Corporal Natawut Cherdsungnern, 23. Both are attached to  Lopburi-based Special Warfare Battalion.

Lumphini police said that the two soldiers were in a pickup truck and was driving past a security checkpoint on Langsuan road in Lumphini area.

March 10 – Two grenades were fired into a car park next to the home of anti-government protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban in Bangkok suburb today but they failed to explode and a bomb squad responded to defuse the projectiles.

An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit was dispatched to the car park of a private bus operator in the Buddhamonthon area, next to the home of Mr Suthep, leader of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC).

Two unexploded M79 rifle grenades were found. Police believe they were fired from the nearby Baromratchchonnanee Bridge or the Buddhamonthon Sai 2 Bridge.
