Heavily armed police forces storm peaceful rally sites;
Centre for Maintaining “Peace and Order” attempts to incite violence a flop

(14 Feb. 2014) Early this morning, while anti-government demonstrators were merit-making for Macha Bucha day (a Buddhist holiday venerating the anniversary of Buddha’s first major sermon and the ordainment of 1,250 monks), heavily-armed law enforcement officials under the instructions of caretaker Labor Minister Chalerm Yubamrung, head of the Centre for Maintaining Peace and Order (CMPO), laid siege to demonstration sites at Misakawan-Makkhawan and Chaeng Wattana in an attempt to reclaim the areas.

Noted PDRC spokesperson Akanat Promphan: “Despite CMPO chief Chalerm’s vow to treat demonstrators like they were his ‘relatives,’ the weapons and equipment the police transported into the sites included handguns, bulletproof protective gear, and net guns (images #1 – #4). In addition, police officers attempted to instigate violence. The unarmed protesters responded by resisting peacefully, choosing to pray instead.” (image #5)

“We particularly applaud NSPRT (Network of Students and People for the Reform of Thailand) rally leaders and protestors, whose Misakawan-Makkhawan site was actually invaded by the police, for their level-headedness and calm,” Akanat complimented (images #6 – #7).

CMPO’s failed attempt to provoke violence to justify the declaration of the Emergency Decree is a desperate ploy by Yingluck Shinawatra’s caretaker government to distract public attention from her failed schemes on rice and rubber. It is also a political maneuver by CMPO chief Chalerm to retain his position. However, the operation was a failure.

“CMPO’s latest move under the groundless Emergency Decree was a flop,” lambasted Akanat. “At Government House (around Misakawan-Makkhawan) the majority of the NSPRT had joined a parade to deliberately avoid confrontation. Therefore, few protesters were present. Those that were stood their ground and refused to engage despite police threats. Demonstrators at Chaeng Wattana also stood their ground – their only response was praying (images #8 – #10). Chalerm was incoherent and rambling during his post-event briefing, and even tried to label rubber-band slingshots as artillery in a nonsensical attempt to show that protesters were armed.” (images #11 – #12)

Continued the PDRC spokesperson: “CMPO has also failed to intimidate the public from joining PDRC rallies. Today is the first day of PDRC’s ‘Thailand Love Fest’ and the streets have been flooded with supporters since early morning. CMPO’s terrorization of citizens has not affected and will not affect our demonstrations. We will continue our efforts to unseat Yingluck’s caretaker government and launch reform before the next elections in a peaceful, unarmed, and non-violent manner.” (images #13 – #14)

 

 

 

Thaksin’s Former Wife Visits Burmese Astrologer

RANGOON — The former wife of Thailand’s ex-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra paid a visit to one of Burma’s most famous astrologers during a recent trip to the country.

Earlier this month Potjaman Na Pombejra, who was reportedly visiting the country with Thaksin, went to see Rangoon-based astrologer San Zarni Bo to seek advice for her former husband’s smooth re-entry to Thailand and to ask about his business concessions in Burma.

The couple divorced in 2008 after more than three decades of marriage but remain close friends.

“The political situation is not good in their country, so they wanted to do some yadaya for internal peace and Thaksin’s return to the country,” a source close to the matter told The Irrawaddy on Friday. Yadaya is a form of magic practiced in Burma to ward off evil spirits and weaken one’s enemies. “She also asked about their oil-related business concessions in Burma’s Tanintharyi [Tenasserim] Division.”

The source said Thaksin and Potjaman stopped at Kaba Aye Pagoda (World Peace Pagoda) during their trip to promote peace in Thailand. The pagoda seemed to be a perfect place for the 66-year-old ex-prime minister to perform the yadaya numerological rituals, as the Sixth Buddhist Council was once held there.

Thaksin also visited Burma last April over the Buddhist New Year, meeting with the commander-in-chief of Burma’s armed forces, Gen Min Aung Hlaing.

The ex-prime minister holds property in Dawei, the southernmost town in Tenasserim Division, where a special economic zone is planned and the multimillion-dollar Dawei deep-sea port project is under construction.

His most recent visit to Burma was reported last week by the Bangkok Post newspaper, which said online photographs showed him at a temple taking part in a merit-making ceremony.

 

Others speculated that he was visiting to attend a supernatural ceremony in Mandalay to fight back against two leaders of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee, Suthep Thaugsuban and Luang Pu Buddha Issara, who have undertaken a campaign to unseat his sister, caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

But the Bangkok Post, quoted Somchai Wongsawat, a leader of the Pheu Thai Party, a pro-Thaksin party, as saying that Thaksin was only in the country to participate in a Buddhist merit-making ceremony.

Hundreds of anti-riot police agreed to retreat from the Chaengwattana protest site before noon today after almost two hours of confrontation with protesters.

Anti-riot police moved out their prison vans and boarded trucks to return to their bases in Nonthaburi.

The sudden pull-out of the area came after another group of government supporters were mobilizing people in the area to counter the anti-government protesters.

The police fear that the confrontation and the appearance of another group, believed to be red-shirts could lead to  armed clashes of the two groups.

The  Chaengwattana protest site became the small battle zone of two rival groups over a week ago. One person was killed and over a dozens injured in the gunfights.

The situation returned normal at noon today.

Feb 14 – Tempers flared at several anti-government rally sites in Thailand’s capital beginning early today as Thai police launched multi-pronged operations to retake occupied areas from anti-government protesters.
