Health volunteers and protesters insisted that the policeman, Kongpetch Petkanha, opened fire first at the protesters rallying in front of the Army Club from across the Vibhavadi Rangsit highway. The protesters then gave chase and one of them was shot as Kongpetch tried to escape.
A search of Kongpetch’s body unveiled one 11-mm automatic pistol, some pingpong bombs, two walkie-talkies, a camera and a motorcycle taxi-driver’s jacket. He was beaten up before he was handed over to military police.
The Centre for Maintaining Peace and Order however defended that Kongpetch was on assignment to monitor the protesters and that he opened fire in self-defence.
Kongpetch was earlier treated at Rajvithi hospital but was later transferred to Phra Mongkut military hospital. He is still in intensive care unit.
Pol Gen Adul also presented an unspecified amount of welfare fund to the injured policeman.
