Police ready to guard rally sites if allowed

BANGKOK, Dec 6 – The government today offered to provide security to anti-government protesters after two of their guards were wounded Thursday night.

Pol Maj Gen Piya Utayo, spokesman for the Centre for Administration of Peace and Order (CAPO), said the Metropolitan Police Command was assigned to talk with protest leaders about dispatching police forces to protect rally sites.

He said the CAPO insists that it would refrain from forcibly dispersing protesters but will carry on protecting state property, avoiding violence, seeking return of areas and government buildings occupied by demonstrators and taking legal action against wrongdoers.

He said police have yet to arrest suspects who threw firecrackers and a home-made bomb into the rally sites  near the Democracy Monument on Ratchdamnoen Avenue and the Finance Ministry on Soi Aree.

The Public Health Ministry has now adjusted its rescue plans so as to enable medical disaster teams to enter clash areas in 90 minutes.

The adjustment was reached at a meeting of the ministry’s Medical Disaster Prevention and Alleviation Operation Center chaired by the ministry’s permanent secretary Dr Narong Sahamethapat.

The meeting discussed how medical teams could access to clash areas and bring injured people out to the nearest hospitals.

The meeting was called to assess the latest figure of demonstrators and people injured from violence in the political turmoil last week as there is now concern about more violence from the renewed anti-government demonstrations.

The meeting was told that from November 30-December 6, a total of 289 people were injured. Among the injured, 25 were admitted to hospital, four in critical condition. Four people also died in the violence.

Dr Narong said that as the political tension has eased during December 4-5, the ministry therefore has to adjust its strategy to cope with the new round of tension.

Under the “Erawan 2” strategy, emergency doctors will be deployed near the demonstration sites, while other teams will be at the bases but are prepared to access the clash areas within 90 minutes.

Latest clash last night at Yaek Kok Wua intersection near the Democracy Monument left two injured from ping pong bomb explosion and knife assault.

Surapong Tovichakchaikul, head of the Center for the Administration of Peace and Order (CAPO), last night ordered the arrest of executives of Blue Sky digital channel, accusing them of supporting anti-Thaksin regime leader Suthep Thuagsuban.

The CAPO head, who is also foreign affairs minister,  also threatened to arrest Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) executives for supporting mobile toilets to demonstrators, and all businesses which supported anti-Thaksin demonstrators through giving them food, water, donations, on same accusations.

He said he has advised the police to take action immediately to seek warrant for their arrest from the court.

Surapong said that since opponent leader Suthep  has faced treason charge and warrant has been issued for his arrest, so any person and business which provided them any facilities would be tantamount to supporting the criminal and should also be arrested.

He also said that he has advised his legal advisory team to consider what action could be taken against demonstrators who supported the wrongdoers in this regard.

Surapong yesterday appointed four advisory teams to consider how to deal with the ongoing demonstrations, one of which is the legal team.

But Blue Sky Channel, meanwhile, defended its role as a media saying that its broadcast of the anti-Thaksin regime demonstrators was an act of duty performing  as a media of which its right was given by the Constitution.

The executives said they were ready to cooperate and explain their roles in the court if action was taken against them.
