Myanmar defence chief stresses border security with India

YANGON, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) —

Commander-in-Chief of Myanmar’s Defense Services Senior-General Min Aung Hlaing has stressed the need for stability and security on the border with India, state media reported Thursday.

Meeting with visiting Indian Army Chief General Bikram Singh in Nay Pyi Taw, Min Aung Hlaing also said peace and stability plays a crucial role in achieving success of Myanmar’s reform.

“Thanks to decade-long amity and mutual trust between the two countries, border regions enjoy more peace and stability than any other regions,” he said.

General Singh reaffirmed cooperation with Myanmar in border region stability and development, disaster risk management and other emergency matters and healthcare in the region.

On Wednesday, General Singh also called on Myanmar President U Thein Sein and the pair discussed bilateral friendship forged through successive governments, implementation of the agreements signed during the latest visits of Myanmar president and Indian prime minister to each other’s country and India’s assistance to Myanmar’s human resources development.

Singh arrived Nay Pyi Taw on Wednesday on a two-day visit following that to the country by Indian Defense Minister AK Antony in January this year.

• အိႏၵိယႏိုင္ငံအေနၿဖင့္ ၿမန္မာႏိုင္ငံ၏ လူ႔စြမ္းအား အရင္းအၿမစ္ ဖြံ႕ၿဖဳိးေရးအတြက္ ကူညီပံ့ပိုးေဆာင္ရြက္ေနမႈ၊

• တပ္မေတာ္ႏွစ္ရပ္ အၾကား ပူးေပါင္းေဆာင္ရြက္မႈ အေနၿဖင့္ အိႏၵိယႏိုင္ငံတြင္ သင္တန္းမ်ား တက္ေရာက္ႏိုင္ေရး ေရြးခ်ယ္ေစလႊတ္ႏိုင္ရန္ ပညာသင္ဆုမ်ား အမ်ားအၿပား ကမ္းလွမ္း ေဆာင္ရြက္ သြားရန္ စီစဥ္ထားရွိမႈ၊

• ၿမန္မာ့ တပ္မေတာ္ ေခတ္မီ ဖြံ႕ၿဖိဳးတိုးတက္ေရးအတြက္ လိုအပ္သည္မ်ားကို ကူညီေဆာင္ရြက္ ေပးသြားရန္ စီစဥ္ထားရွိမႈ၊

• အိႏၵိယႏိုင္ငံ နယ္စပ္တြင္ အဖ်က္အေမွာင့္ လုပ္ငန္းမ်ား ေဆာင္ရြက္ေနသည့္ ေသာင္းက်န္းသူမ်ားအား ႏွိမ္နင္းရာတြင္ ၿမန္မာႏိုင္ငံဘက္မွ ကူညီေပးခဲ့မႈမ်ား အတြက္ ေက်းဇူးတင္ ရွိမႈ၊

The United Wa State Party (UWSP) and National Democratic Alliance Army (NDAA) will not attend the Ethnic Armed Organisations Conference to be held in Laiza, Kachin State.

The conference takes place on Wednesday and 19 ethnic armed groups have been invited. Among them, the UWSP and the NDAA announced that they will not participate in the conference despite being invited, leading some to think that China may be refusing them permission.

“Among 19 armed groups, 17 groups will attend the conference except two groups. The UWSP and the NDAA said that they are very glad to be invited. But they replied that they can’t attend the conference because their leaders are not feeling well,” said Dwe Pe Sa, who is in charge of Kachin Independence Organisation’s victim relief committee.

Dwe Pe Sa added that he could not comment further as to what was really behind the reason the two groups were not attending as it was very difficult to say. Others however were quick to say that Chinese influence was to blame.

“We are hearing the news as the UWSP and the NDAA can’t attend the conference because they can’t get the Chinese permission,” said La Maing Kwan Jar from Kachin Peace Committee Group.

“It may be rumors. But, that what we’ve heard,” La Maing Kwan Jar added. Eleven Media was unable to reach the UWSP’s spokesperson for a comment.

Aung Kyaw Zaw, a military observer in China-Myanmar border area and who is also close with the ethnic armed groups replied to queries that it may be possible as the UWSP and NDAA can’t attend the conference because of the Chinese force.

“It is possible they can’t attend the conference. In my opinion, there are three options. Firstly, they have signed the ceasefire agreement so they think that they don’t need to attend the conference. Secondly, they don’t desire to participate in the political dialogue because they don’t understand Myanmar’s political issues. Finally, they can’t attend the conference due to disturbances. Whatever it is, I think they should attend the conference,” Aung Kyaw Zaw told Eleven Media.
